We don't need to change our style of play to accomodate him, but, as your post itself indicates his success with Wolfsburg came largely because he was the focal point of attack. His situation there was more like what the fanatical "Bosnian Diamond" promoters want - for Dzeko to be the only - or biggest - star of the team, with the other players merely bit-part supporters of the only player they are really interested in.EaglesFan said:Why people still dwell on "give him crosses" and "we need to change our style of play and become stoke-like" is beyond me. These are people who havent watched Dzeko before coming here.
At his best days in Wolsburg, Dzeko had fucking Schaffer and "I dont even know the other guy" for wingers. Ok? Those guys make AJ look like Robben.
Bottom line - their wing play was shit.
So please STOP with "Dzeko needs wingers/crosses" crap - he is far from one-dimensional player.
What he DID have at Wolfsburg though is - he was the focal point of their attack (and a great teammate up front in Grafite). Plays were designed for him going forward (he did not have to drop deep in midfield). He was #1.
His problem here since the beggining is that this was the first time in his life where he had to take a back seat. It turns out he didnt adjust to that too well. In a team like this (4 outstanding strikers) you can get marginialized if you cant keep your form while being rotated - which is exactly what happened, and Dzeko loves to PLAY THE GAME (as you can see by his behaviour on the pitch).
So it will come down to what he wants to do, and what he thinks is best for him. And I truly believe this goal vs QPR can be a big difference maker for him. Before this last game I thought he would be out definitely. Afterwards - he might realize you can be on the pine when not playing well and still do big things in your career, and his stock with Roberto has risen a bit.
So - we will have to wait and see, but just please stop with "we need to change our style of play to accomodate him" nonsense, cause we DONT.
If you dont believe it - go see some Wolfsburg games from few years back.
With such as Aguero, never mind Yaya Toure, Silva etc. around (and that's just the "offense"), Dzeko can clearly never expect that sort of primary starring role. Actually he seems to be a really nice sort of person who wouldn't expect that, so, as you say, it depends on what he really wants out of the game whether he is satisfied with his position at City.
My comments about Stoke-style play were deliberately over-simplified to make a point (actually neither Stoke nor old Wimbledon are/were as one-dimensional as often portrayed). As you point out Dzeko isn't one-dimensional, but with the ball at his feet he is clearly one of the less immediately talented of City's strikers. I still feel that his best role might generally be as a "super sub", one who comes on late in a game, when most of the players will be tiring, and losing concentration and skill. This is how this season he seems to have been most effective, and scored some important goals - resulting in his impressive goals per minute ratio so often quoted to "prove" that he's the best striker in the EPL/world/universe etc.
Of course there are certain games - e.g. against an opposition with a defence known to be suspect against high balls - where he would be a good bet to play from the start. But such defences are relatively rare in the EPL.
