The Boxing thread

Wilder is notorious for that, that's how he swung the first Ortiz fight. I noticed in the 5th or 6th round Wilder drove his elbow down on the back of Fury's head while his head was down. It really wound me up that the ref didn't catch it. I don't blame Fury at all for giving it back.

I was expecting more of that to be honest, half expecting a DQ loss for Wilder. I missed the Helenius fight but it sounds that's how that fight went. Kownacki taking two losses to Helenius now. Well done to Helenius.

went to watch Froch v Abraham in Helsinki, as I arrived at the arena there was hundreds of fans pouring out, I had panic attack thinking I’d missed the fight and said to someone “ is the fight over ? “ they said “ yes Helenius won “

they’d just gone to watch their man and didn’t even stay for the main event :)

never experienced anything like that before

arena floor was mostly round tables with people having dinner and zero security after the fight. I just walked straight to ringside after the fight and was stood next to Bunce and Haye while they interviewed Froch.

bizarre night and Bunce told me the best restaurant to go for the best reindeer in Iceland lol

Wasn’t going to bother getting up, So glad I did one of if not the best fights I’ve watched!

Tyson for me is the best heavy weight fighter they’ve been.
It's s huge statement to suggest Fury is the best ever. But whilst we can never know that, at the same time you have to admit that he very well might be.

The other main contenders in my eyes would be Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson. Ali is regarded by many as the greatest ever, but he just wouldn't have had the power or strength needed IMO to stop this 6'9" 19 stone monster. His only hope would have been to go the distance and win on points but with Fury leaning all over him and sapping his strength could he have lasted 12 rounds with Fury? I'm not sure he could.

And Mike Tyson? His incredible hand speed and punching power ended nearly all of his fights early. But in many ways he was quite like Wilder - phenomenal and fearsome going forward but little in the way of defensive skills. So if you could survive his early onslaught - a very big IF - then you were in with a chance. Would Tyson be able to finish off Fury early, before Fury finished him off? Maybe. But only maybe.

Fury is a once in a generation freak of nature. A Usain Bolt of boxing if you will. A man so huge, and yet light on his feet and with quick hands. A slugger who can also box on the back foot. And arguably his greatest unique asset, the heart of a warrior who will not quit unless he's unconscious. Very hard to see who can take his crown off him right now. AJ would have zero chance, BTW.

Fury gets all my respect in the world as a fighter but Ali & Mike Tyson are only a couple who are clear of him in the all time greats list, Joe Louis, Holmes, Frazier, Foreman, Holyfield have all got resumes that Fury ( through no fault of his own ) will never be able to achieve

I also feel Bowe and Lewis beat him due to their size and ability and Fury’s lack of concussive power

he will go down as the best of his era and rightly so

Yep watched Ali in his later years watched some of his early fights to, a showman like Fury a in game thinking boxer like fury.. Tyson in his peak with his speed would be the one that could do fury if once he did knock him down he would be on him so quick with those quick speed punches he could finish him off! But Fury would know this take this in to account and try keep him at arms length for 4/5 rounds!

Maybe experts in boxing from the past would be more qualified to say whose the best ever but then it still an opinion!

It is difficult to look at those fighters with their toned muscular bodies and their phenomenal hand speed, power and technique to the huge 19 stone frame of Tyson Fury with his lower back fat and compare. However I agree that they would have struggled to overcome the Brit so he should be mentioned in that conversation.

Great résumés don't win you fights though do they.

But how do you define "the greatest"? If their CV is part of that equation - and that is a fair argument - then I agree Fury has a long way to go.

Sure all the names you mention would be in with a shot against Fury, but would they beat him? Who knows. It's open to debate IMO and in that sense then whether Fury is the best fighter of all time is also open to debate.

Lewis is the best British heavyweight of all time. Fury has not exceeded his achievements or resume as of yet.
Fury is s my fave fighter at the minute, but it's silly to rank him amongst the greatest just yet.

Frank Sanchez beat Efe Ajagba but the fight was a bit stale for most of it apparently. I caught the last few rounds of that one. I'll try and watch the undercards tonight or tomorrow.

Not a good night for the PBC. Kownacki, Ajagba and Wilder all taking Ls. Sanchez is a PBC fighter but Ajagba has received the most backing between the two.
