The Boxing thread

Totally different eras and yes the revenue would probably make iit the biggest fight ever but only because it’s 2024 and massive promotion but it wouldn’t even make top 20 best fights ever and app Joshua now beats usyk again because he beat the mma fighter .

MARKETING… they have a fight to sell. I know you’re not this daft, Mark.

Of course, but I don’t think there’s anyway I can prove to you and others why I think Fury v AJ would be one of the biggest fights ever

My personal opinion = ‘my nan knows more’
Biggest selling = ‘that means nothing’
Biggest revenue = ‘means nothing’
Boxing promoter saying this would be biggest fight ever = ‘marketing’
Loads of ex pros/pundits saying this would be one of the biggest fights ever = ‘what do they know’

So I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Mine is sugar ray v Hagler

Yeah that’s a good shout, Hagler Hearns was huge…. Don’t think there’s a matchup available that comes close to some in the past
De-La-Hoya v Trinidad was a huge fight in recent memory but the actual fight was a let down so won’t be remembered the same

But you must see how biggest selling and biggest revenue actually do mean nothing

Would you honestly say Fury v Joshua getting record streams or whatever would make it bigger than Joe Louis v Max Schmeling rematch leading up to WW2 ?

Recency bias is all it is. I prefer to think of it in terms of the quality of fighter and the quality of the division at that time.
AJ / Tyson doesn’t come close.

I was taking the piss out of somebody else who said it was scripted
haha
I can imagine the conversation.

” We’ll spar a bit, nothing serious, then in the 3rd i’ll leave my side open and you hit me with a gut punch?”

”fuck no, leave your guard down in the second and Anthony will smash your face in with a fully weighted haymaker. Theres a chance of brain damage but it will look better.“

”yeah, good idea”

Older generational bias is all it is.
In a decade or so time some heavyweight champion will be saying they are nothing compared to AJ/Fury etc
Same we do for modern day musicians and footballers.

Dont agree. You can go back and watch older fights and they knock the socks off the modern bouts.

Benn / Eubank era was spectacular For the british middleweight division.

i think the heavyweight division started a hefty decline around Lennox Lewis. He was good but was pretty much the only one so was elevated above his actual competency. Been utter shite since then

being able to pick and chose who you fight has ruined the sport.
