The Boxing thread

I want to go to a proper boxing match one day as I've taken interest in it recently. What is the crowd like for an average bout? Obviously Ricky Hatton in Manchester would be as partisan as anything but I was thinking more Froch v Groves or something. Is it literally people supporting one fighter over the other or is it more enjoying the fight as it is?

I've been to WWF Wrestling but that's hardly a comparison...

Seems the Mayweather camp are complaining about the gloves Maidana intends to wear...

"Michael Woods of The Sweet Science has reported there is a bit of a controversy regarding the gloves that Marcos Maidana wanted to use for tomorrow night’s fight against Floyd Mayweather.

Maidana wanted to use Everlast MX gloves, but Mayweather’s team objected to them due to the distribution of padding in the gloves.

Promoter Richard Schaefer said “Both fighters, when you have usually in these big fights, it says both fighters can select the brand and the color of the gloves but both agree to eight ounce and if it is above 147 pounds, then ten ounce, but that is it. It doesn’t stipulate what type of gloves. Probably going forward, that has to be done."

Money wins again and its the first time in a long time I seen him getting roughed up at times. It was a close fight. A rematch I wouldnt mind seeing. But in the end Money had too much in the championship rounds and I had him winning by 2 rounds.

Also Khan looked ok in his win too. A Khan v Money fight could end up happening. I think Khan needs 1 more fight before Money. Maybe against a Brook or Keith Thurman would be good. Then it could open up big fights with Money , Pacman or Marquez in time.

Old gets like me may remember Matthew Saad Muhammed who had some right tear up's in the late 70's/early 80's at Light Heavy.

Well he is no more as he's died a homeless shell of a man. Very sad.

Most famous for me as having beaten John Conteh in 2 world title fights. First one he overcame a horrendous eye injury to win on points over 15 rounds but his corner used an illegal substance to treat the eye so a rematch was ordered. This time no doubt as Conteh was flattened in 4.

RIP "Miracle Matthew"

I remember how the 'Show Time' announcer used to drag out the pronunciation of Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Homeless ? Very sad. Suppose not much money in the game in those days.

How has Froch made Groves look anything?

Froch ridiculed himself with his comments since losing to Kessler. He was outboxed in Denmark and said be couldve won in Nottingham. Since then he's been a caricature.

Constant remarks about himself as a superstar, warrior, granite chin, relentless, iron willed etc. He claimed Groves had no class and came running after him when he had no right to, fact is Groves was mandatory. Froch made his name calling out a Calzaghe that would've comprehensively schooled him in the ring, even a shot Hopkins would beat Froch now. Froch went into super six because he had few options and the division was full of contenders but no names. Arguably, the two biggest names were middleweights coming up in weight to super middle.

Froch lost v Dirrel ( I watched with my own eyes the robbery, he couldn't land clean, lunged into punches and was rocked but never hurt Andre once) but got a robbery, he lost to Kessler and he lost to Ward yet he proclaims he's the cream of the division who everyone wants to fight. Fact is Ward schooled him, at range and in the pocket and yet Froch talks like it was a close fight, watch again, it is far fucking from close, it was clear and decisive.

Groves KD Froch round one and won every round up to rd 7, he tired but that's understandable, he could've had a second wind as many fighters do in twelve round fights. Froch had a good rd 8 and 9. Yet the cards were tight and as questionable as the decision yet Froch boldly and ludicrously claims it was a good stoppage and he was coming on strong and the deserved winner. Froch was booed by his own fans because his lack of dignity after the fight, he boldly claimed 'that's thy they love me', I mean who the fuck says these things?

Since, he's been told what to say and downplay the diatribe outbursts. Anybody who's seen Frochs rise will say he's turned into a prick and it's all gone to his head.

Groves is a sharper, quicker, more clinical, better all round and defensively more astute fighter than Froch. He beats him for power, speed, ability and ring craftsmanship yet Froch speaks condescendingly down to him because Groves doesn't hype up Froch. Froch seeks adoration, he seeks respect. Boxing is a fight game and opponents don't have to verbally give blowjobs on the build up, that's where Froch got angry initially and bitter since. I see Groves outboxing him but pacing better, not looking to use up as much energy and fighting on the back foot when needed. A clear and concise win for Groves and I predict Froch will retire after going to Vegas for a fight with Chavez Jr.

FWIW, Froch was at his best as a person and fight v Pascal.

A lot of casual fans will look at the fight this weekend not knowing much about either fighter to be honest. Its a real pick em fight for me. Groves is playing mind games again something I don't mind it adds a bit of niggle and bite to the fight. It might seem like he is acting like a twat but the mind games worked last time and Froch hasn't looked comfortable in the build up to this fight or the last 1.

The card for a ppv is good with some good fights on it. I fancy Kevin Mitchell and McDonald to win. I think Degale is in a hard fight think he will have it all to do to get the win. I could see it going to the points to be honest. All the other fights should go to the books with Joshua winning by KO again.

Not having that.

Groves hit Froch with a belter in the first round, granted, yet it was his arrogance and naivety that handed Groves that opportunity by poor footwork and thinking he could simply walk through him. Groves then gave everything he had but Froch just took it. Froch had about 2 rounds where he started to land more regularly on Groves and in the middle of R9, whether it was an unjust stoppage or not, Groves looked wobbled.

Groves is the better boxer, I'd agree, however Froch has never been a brilliant boxer, he's been a brilliant fighter. Groves will only win, IMO, if he boxes smart for the 12 rounds and just frustrated Froch. I just have my reservations over Groves discipline and ability to stick to the game plan in a fight of such magnitude, which is why I'm slightly leaning towards a Froch by stoppage.

Heart says Groves because of how good he was against Froch in Manchester but head says Froch because of his experience. What Groves must NOT do is tire himself out too easily because Froch has got the experience of grinding those wins out. As said, he is the better fighter but the poorer boxer.
