The Boxing thread

Everybody is entitled to an opinion mate, especially paying customers.

Where I do have a problem, is where entitled Brits build up their athletes and performers then break them down again. Everyone will suddenly care again when AJ does a Frank Bruno. He is a human being who has tried his very best and come up short on the world stage a few times.

Not many people in the world could turn up and put their body through what elite performers do every day, nor make the sacrifices they make. AJ has given paying customers in the arenas and pubs some of the best nights of their lives, and won gold at the Olympics for his country. People should have more respect for him as a human being, anybody who's got into a ring at any level knows it's a lot harder than just 'move your head' or 'throw more combos'.

The lad has clearly held the weight of the world on his shoulders for 10 years and it's all got a bit too much. Poisonous opinions cause mental health problems, rich and famous or not. We have an endemic issue in this country amongst young men, and Joe public's behaviour towards other young men is at the root of the problem.
Okay. But that's not what you said last night, what I replied to.

No shame in being second best in a hard fought 12 rounder.
The problem I have with Joshua is the hype is often at odds with his ability.
Sure he’s a skilled operator but he’s also got one or two flaws that will see him never quite get to the top again
His reputation and ability to bring in big bucks at the box office will see him get more opportunities but I don’t see him holding another belt before he calls it a day.

I may be misunderstanding your post that suggests that it is crazy to think that Fury would beat Usyk: is that what you are saying?
No mate it was aimed a post which said wilder would beat usyk . As for fury - usyk. Genuine 50/50 fight

I actually felt sorry for Usyk ffs a night that should have been about HIM was turned yet again into the Mr Hype show ............ I really hope he’s done now the hype around him really is shocking

I'm not watching any of those Joshua clips. It's not entertaining to watch a man who is physically and mentally exhausted after 12 rounds of being hit, trying not to be hit and hitting back. After constantly doing the same with the public. Having to deal with his dreams being shattered in front of millions whilst being that worn out. Having possibly suffered some type of concussion, fatigue, mental break down. When he acts in the way the mind and body probably is supposed to do we all laugh at him.

Only if he has a full breakdown will the British public warm to him again. But only if he toes the line and humbles himself. Doffs his cap to us before eventually winning dancing on ice and appearing on numerous panel shows smiling and laughing at the jokes the chosen left of center middle class jesters make about him.

To be honest, it's ridiculous that we allow them to be interviewed after the fight (do we really expect them to be thinking rationally and have a good take on hoe the fight went)?

Recently re-watched the first Froch-Groves installment and whilst Carl doesn't need too many invitations too come off as a bit of a nob at times, he has to be reminded that he was heavily floored I'm the first during his post fight interview.

With that in mind, how can we expect him to give any kind of insightful interview?

Joshua definitely comes off a nob for grabbing the mic on Saturday but as I've posted earlier on, his team should not have allowed it if he was showing signs off not thinking particularly straight.

He was let down badly..............

About 20 team members and not one of them thought to jump in and take the mic off him? A lot of people blaming concussion but personally I think that was a sign of deeper mental health issues, as much as I was rooting for Usyk I hope hes ok and gets the help he needs.

Dont think he needs to retire, if he sticks around beating the likes of Whyte (again) whilst Usyk and Fury fight, he will probably end up fighting for another belt down the line, and theres some great domestic scraps on the horizon with the likes of Joyce, Clarke, Dubois, Wardley etc on the way up. Just depends what he wants from boxing now, still plenty of milk left in the cash cow.

I'd agree with this and something I was about to post.

I've, yet, to see the post fight interview (I switched straight over to UFC), but it strikes me from what I'm reading on here, he was pissed off in not letting himself have a proper crack at Usyk.

Watching the fight, he seemed to be balancing pace and timing against being knocked out as a fear. He walked through the best Usyk could give him, clearly hurt him, but still waited.

That frustration with himself would permeate being 'nice'. I think this loss of a potential win will change him, change his mindset and force him to do things fully differently and not half commit.

I know if it were me, I'd be fucked off with myself more than anyone else.

Maybe I'll retract my comments after watching the video, maybe it will reaffirm it. We'll see.
I fell asleep and had to catch UFC the next morning..WOW!

I think what people fail to understand, and i think what he was trying to say in his rant, is that these guys at this level put everything into it and between fights its a long time just thinking about what happened and what you would do differently. When you put so much into it and really give it your all, but it's still not enough, it's kind of heart-breaking realising there's a guy you will probably never be able to beat. I think unfortunately this happened to him live on camera and he just shot from the hip about everything he was thinking. His friends/family should have stopped him.

There was a distinct change in him, he was much more aggressive at the beginning but that maybe changed in the Klitschko fight (?) where he realised there were guys out there that are amazing. Even though he's a gold medalist, i think pure boxing talent-wise and actually even experience-wise, he is behind the top, top guys.

Moving on, i think Usyk vs Tyson is a completely different fight. Usyk is SLICK, he moves so well and never lets anyone set but the biggest difference i see is that Fury doesn't really set either. He is almost the same (obviously slower) with his slickness but he moves so well, i don't think he'd be outboxed as much and he also has the ability to actually fight at distance but also uses his frame so well up close.

Yeah this was terrible, emotion was running high and someone (even that pussy Hearn) should have stepped in and saved AJ from himself. Thought Usyk handled it really well.

Honestly i don't think it was as weird as everyone is making it out to be, it was just pure emotion and being overwhelmed with it all. I'm sure it can happen at such a high level, everyone constantly telling you that if you lose the next fight you have to retire and you're fighting for your life & future. High pressure situation. What it does prove is that he is surrounded by the wrong people, his real people would have told him straight when he was thinking about tossing the belts out the ring.

There's some footage that's been released on the SkySports website, it doesn't really help much to clear why he went nuts. But there is a bit right at the end where the mic picked up a hug between the two fighters. Usyk says "you are very strong" and is trying to reassure a fighter who he can clearly see has lost it a bit, and AJ retorts "i don't care about being strong, its about skill". He is basically admitting to himself that he didn't have the skill, he says he had character and i think he's trying to comfort himself that he at least showed some character against a clearly superior fighter. Still no idea why he went mental about the two belts, i guess they weren't on the line until Fury gave them up recently? He throws them out the ring and then gets mad at Usyk's corner for clearly not being happy with that, and to be fair his team saved him further embarrassment there.

Felt a bit for AJ in the last 3 rounds he was taken apart by a better boxer, saying that he isn't finished he still has time.

Against an opponent like Usyk his best shot would have been to try and bomb him out, trying to outbox him was a mistake IMO. My opinion however is tempered with the fact I am just an observer and have no idea whatsoever what it takes to fight in the ring against a world class boxxer.

AJ not a fighter that is his problem.

Your logic is correct, in practice the problem is if you try and bomb someone out whos a superior boxer like Usyk they could pick you off with counter punching, the other bigger problem which we witnessed after the impressive 9th round is that you run out of steam very quickly! Just like the first fight the tactics will be debated but I agree with the notion he got them largely correct this time he just couldnt execute them because the other guy was a better boxer

Just watched more footage of Joshua chucking the belts and what a disgrace it was . Anyone else would be getting hammered for being so disrespectful but not Joshua who is only being hunan . All the years of being the role model destroyed in 2 minutes

Good comment, well made.

What I would say about Usyk (although I haven't watched much of him outside the two Joshua fights) is that he seems extremely strategic and moves very well.

It's not a walkover for Fury. He moves his feet well enough, but he has a big target to hit and Usyk would utilise that to his advantage.
