The Boxing thread

To stave off the usual barrage of unwanted socks and "comedy" gifts I'm asking for a couple of boxing books for my birthday.

2 that caught my eye were Dark Trade by Donald McRae and Four Kings by George Kimball, has anyone read these ?

While searching I came across this website which uniquely as far as i could find sells a 7 DVD boxset "4 Kings", containing all 9 fights involving Hagler Hearns Duran and Leonard in full along with several accompanying documentaries.

£15 sounds too good to be true

I have the Wayne McCullough atuobiography somewhere in the house and is a pretty decent read. The man is my main reason why I have got into boxing big. From his Olympic days for Ireland I just had to watch him. I have 4 Kings by George Kimball nearly 4 years and still havnt read it all I do start it and then stop it. Might read it some time soon. Need a long plane journey or rail journey to get into it. From what i am told it is a really good book. I also have Evander Holyfield's and Barry McGugian's autiobiography. All worth a read. I would rather read a boxing book about the fighter instead of the 4 kings book. If you fancy the McCullough book let me know and I will send it off to you.

The Great White Hopes is good about all the fighters they got to try and beat Jack Johnson

sorry can't believe i forgot Durans own book Hands of Stone was great and it might be that one that has the stuff about Hearns, but its a quality read

If you haven't already read it try 'The big if' the Johnny Owen story.

True story of welsh boxer Johnny Owen who died of injuries resulting from his challenge for the world title. Not your usual big name autobiography and both heart rendering and inspiring book. Well worth a read. In fact I may re-read it this coming week.

I love my boxing and am no expert but Jim watts commentaries seems so extreme. One minute one guy is winning easily, the next round it's all turned around. I agree he is a bit shit.

I've not read the book, but I'm pretty familiar with the story as I followed Johnny's rise up to that fight at the time (Lupe Pintor iiirc), I still remember to this day how sick I felt watching the scene's as Johnny was carried from the ring, unconscious, with the Mexican crowd spitting on him, knowing what kind of lad Johnny was (incredibly shy and humble for starters) I can imagine that it is exactly that 'both heart rendering and inspiring', great call mate.

Watt is fucking awful, "he's broken his heart" fuck up jim!!

Please let the Bute hype die now, a fighter without the fight! Looking forward to seeing Mikey Garcia again next week.

Thanks for the recommendations lads

Didn't watch Pascal Bute but in general I think Jim's a good judge of a fight. He needs a more authoritative commentator than Halling alongside him to rein him in a bit at times though.

Skys Coverage went downhill over the years. Paul Dempsey going started it off. Then Iain Darke he had a real passion for the fights. I think they need to sprinkle something new in there. I dont mind a former boxer. I would rather have Jamie Moore in there instead of Watt. I can see Darren Barker doing something with sky now he is retired.

Dempsey was / is a class act but Adam Smith is just as good.

I've nout against Moore or Barker as pundits but I'd hate to see boxing follow the world of football punditry and flood the commentary boxes with very recently retired lads. I like an older voice, someone who's seen it, done it and moved on from it and is thus able to speak with perspective and experience and wisdom

Dave Boy McCalley used to do it on the Irish boxing and done a Frampton card before. When sky were doubling with a US card.

might be but Froch will vacate if they force him, he wants to fight a big Vegas fight first and i don't blame him

Surely a massive domestic PPV would generate more money than a Chavez Jnr fight on HBO (Jnr is not an American PPV star). Plus what happens if Jnr loses to Vera like he did last time regardless of what the judges said. Enjoy watching Froch, but the man is a cock IMO.

Groves might have been winning on points but Froch was getting the better of him and the Ref had to save Groves a humiliation or worse. Froch shouldn't be obliged to take part in the rematch. Groves' whinging is starting to piss me off. He's a bad loser.
