The Boxing thread

People don't half forget Lennox, Tyson wouldn't of lived with him in his prime, never mind haye day (:

Lennox has a better record than Tyson, far better, for a start he beat everyone he ever faced, avenging his 2 losses.

Tyson was exciting and brought an edge to the heavyweight scene, but he wasnt as good as is made out, casual fans think he's one of the greatest of all time, his record and real experts make him out to be maybe top 20, not even top 10 of all time.

I dont think we disagree too much, Tyson was a beast and exciting, but his 'peak' was too short lived for him to be great. The only way to compare fighters is to compare records, and history wont be too kind on Tyson, because his record isnt great.

Bowe wanted no part of Lennox when they were in their primes, dumped the belt in a bin, rather than face him and then Holyfield and Bowe got into their fights before Bowe retired for the first time, Lennox was ducked by a lot of fighters, including Tyson, who paid money not to fight him, Lennox is older than Tyson, so there is no way Tyson should have been over the hill before him or their 'prime' being so different. I think Tyson fought a lot of shit early on and got the hype, while Lennox was winning olympic gold. They both fought Razor Ruddock in their primes, Lennox blew him away and he went the distance with Tyson.

At risk of dragging this out....

What I meant was Tyson's best years came before Lennox's. Tyson's best years came early. Lennox came good later on. Tyson was a beast at 18, Lennox was gangly until his later 20's. Interestingly, they sparred at Catskills but as far as I know, no footage available. Apparently Lennox took the sessions.

Bowe was fucking brilliant but his shed went. Him vs Lennox is the one that got away.

Plenty on here criticising Hearn. Fair enough he's a wide boy, but there's no way he lets Lennox vs Bowe slip away. Here's hoping he gets the big uns made involving Josh, Fury, Wilder, Povetkin & Haye

Tyson was only at his best for a handful of his fights! You cant ignore the poor fights and losses! He gets hype because of the manner of victory in those early years but once it got tough he faded. No one talks about Holyfield being great but he had Tyson beat comfortabley!

Bollocks. Holyfield was immense. Unbelievable fighter.

Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe. All brilliant.

Peak Tyson (late 80's not faded 90's) wins those fights though

You can't measure Tyson on what he might have done! He is responsible for how his career ended and age wise there is little between them, a fighter that was washed up for half his career and resorted to biting people's ears does not deserve all time great status.

He did have his number but this was after a 3 year prison spell.

When Tyson came out, he badly needed the money and he was performing poorly in his tune up fights, but was ending them by spectacular KO which glossed over the performance. He was nowhere near ready to go in with Holyfield when he did, but needed to.

It's impossible to say how good he could have been. Everything changed after Cus died. He stopped training. The night before he lost to Douglas, he was in his hotel room with a cart load of strippers. People forget he technically should have won that fight. He put Douglas down and he was down for around 13 seconds. His prime years were basically wasted because he didn't live the life and he was destroying foes with such ease that he was hardly training, taking drugs etc.

On top of that he had the prison time. Holyfield and Lewis beat him comfortably but I don't think anyone can say with any certainty that they would have done the same thing when Tyson was anywhere near his best.

And for the record, everybody in boxing talks about Holyfield being great. He just slightly tainted his legacy with his performance enhancing drugs scandal.

Great buzz in AJ fights. Golovkin-like KO power and Khan-like speed(well for a heavyweight)...
It galls me that Haye might get a pop with no names on his record since coming back. IMO he needs to fight at least a Dillan Whyte/David Price/Derek Chisora first. Is Hughie Fury going to fight ANYONE btw?

I'd like to see a Whyte vs Klitschko/Fury fight. I thought he was pretty good against AJ and wasn't afraid to give it a go. Took a lot to knock him down as well.

Dillan Whyte is shit as fuck, just because he fought AJ last people think he's actually something? What would Haye get out of fighting those you mentioned besides from KO'ing them and wasting his time?

Last year or so I've totally gone off boxing, it's become so boring since I got in to watching MMA. The only exciting fighter is Khan, can't wait for his fight.

Regarding Tyson early years he brought everything with him a buzz and excitement. I agree when Cus went he went off the rails its a what could of been with Mike for me. Lennox was a great heavyweight champion but at the end he did great but when his first major test came along he retired when Vitali Klitschko came along and fought Lennox he soon retired when people were all calling for a rematch.

As for AJ take the mandatory fight asap whoever it is go in with them. Then you would be looking at either the big money fights for him. So a fight with either Haye or Fury should make a lot of money more so Haye saying that I dont think AJ is ready for either he might be 2 to 3 fights away from fighting either in my opinion. Just see the likes of both Haye and Fury being able to handle his power but would AJ be able to handle the shots from either i am not too sure yet.

As for the boxing and amount of UK fighters as World Champion it is some going there could be more to come the talent there is coming up is just going to get better and better. Some good fighters not too far off a World title fight and others will when they get a shot win 1 like AJ did being Callum Smith. Also next weekends world title fight with the Smiths brother should be good 1 to look at in the US.

Fury aint no mug and to say AJ would beat him is a bit mad. Hearn wont touch Fury or Haye for a few fights time. Fury has been inactive for 3 years when you think about it he only has had 5 fights which is fuck all. 2 fights a year in his last 2 in my opinion isnt that great but Fury has a lot of heart and will be hard to beat. He handled Klitshcko well and will just take AJ into his type of fight. I would favour Fury if the 2 were to fight next time out.

Completely agree mate Fury currently is a class above AJ imo.
