People who die and have no living relatives and do not leave a will their money, property and possessions go to the Crown or the government. It has always been that, it is nothing new. That is why people are told to make a will.

Most people probably didn't know that the money goes to Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster if the deceased resided within their respective boundaries at the time of their passing.

There isn't any convincing reason why the Duchies need such money or why those historic boundaries need special treatment.
