The British Monarchy

Went to visit a 100 year old just before Christmas. Marvellous ( has a glass of red every day) lady. “I got my telegram from the King and … well she’s not really the Queen!” That sums it up for me too.

Exactly the same as family.
She's not the queen so why do people call her Queen
  • Following the Queen's (Elizabeth II) wish, Camilla was crowned Queen at the coronation in May 2023, with the "Consort" dropped from official invitations, and she is now known as Queen Camilla.

She will still be legally the Queen Consort, but is referred to as the Queen as per the wishes of QE2.

Not that it matters! :-)

I am officially the ‘Common law consort’ to Mrs KS.
She shortens my title to just ‘common.’

Whenever I read the term ‘common law wife’ I am reminded of this (truly remarkable) man.

Technically, a common law wife is someone who marries in the ancient common law way by giving notice to the world. Today, that still operates. You give notice to the registrar, he posts the notice in the entrance hall and he confirms it several weeks later when you appear in person before him. I married this way so Mrs KS is truly my common law wife.

Liz is turning in her marble mausoleum and never countenanced the (if) Parker-Bowles (England will win) floosy wearing the Crown Jewels. Brian was well aware but before his dear departed mother had left Scotland he was fixing. Absolute ****. But is anyone surprised?

That's because he wasn't King, he was Prince Consort making the husband of the Queen a King would imply he had some power. The Queen was the monarch with all the power, damn sexual discrimination.
Yep. King means “ruler of people” so can be a title taken by either sex but only if they are deemed to be such a ruler. Queen originally meant “wife” (of the King) so Prince Philip could never have been either, but over time due to most succession rules being in favour of males and also because having a wife was important for continuity the word has changed to mean “female ruler”.

A few months before her death HM Queen Elizabeth expressed her wish that she be know as Queen so don't think she's doing to much spinning.
