Not entirely sure what is being re-written. I can see that there are uncomfortable events in Britains past may be being highlighted but thats not re-writing. For example Colston was involved in the slave trade. Highlighting that is not re-writing history. The culture war will simply backfire on the Govt if they try and stifle free speech in the name of free speech
It won't backfire with anyone that matters to the Tories.
Strikes me there's a sizeable number of Brits that want to live in a nostalgic fantasy. Many of them know it's bullshit, but they don't care, for them reality has no upsides, it's their bullshit, they're keeping it, and that's what matters.
