For some time its been clear that Johnson has lost his ability to read the room - furthermore he didn't realise that in our system when you reach the top job you are at the pointy end of that triangle - you can't duck and dive you can't hide and your lies start to catch up with you too

The only Dept and Ministerial office not to have held a party will be revealed to be Patel's - although it will transpire she allowed them to loosen the cuffs anchoring them to their desks for 5 minutes and treat each staffer to a hard tack biscuit and half a glass of water - still not sparkling of course

We used to dream of having such a lavish spread when I was a Civil Servant. If we had one, it was because we paid for it ourselves.

It’s like the Govt decided to put on a Christmas panto for our entertainment.

“Inspector Case is on the case, boys and girls!”

In my day we had to beg the Department to let us eat the sandwiches and drink the pale ale we’d bought ourselves.

On a serious note, I did work for the Revenue, and we really did have to pay for our own Xmas do's. When I visited employers, we had to fill in a hospitality form if we were entertained on or off the premises, when we got back to the office. A cup of tea was considered de minimis as regards reporting, though. Travelled all over the UK with the job, and sampled most of the real beers I could in that time!
