Bills of £5,000 per annum plus are unaffordable ..
I'm not arguing with that. If prices are at an unsustainable level this time next year they will have to do the same again over the winter months when 75% of our energy is used. There would be no option because the consequences to business and individuals would be catastrophic.

I suspect that this will be what will happen if prices don't come back to sensible levels.

People need to know now......making the population worry until then is uncalled for and unnecessary.

At least for the six months from April it will be much easier to keep the heating off.
That would be the hope a try and build up enough for the following winter, then the year after prices should significantly drop because they buy in advance and I believe the price is low at the moment. Hopefully Putin will be dead and that could help with prices as well.

Agreed. There is nothing to stop them making a statement to stop people worrying unnecessarily.
some people don't qualify for UC and have low pay but just over thresholds for extra help...Its scary times ....especially if you have kids.

Mortgages, energy costs and inflation...its all going really bad and worrying.

I can't see how prices can ever reduce. Russian gas accounted for 40% of EU supply, 13% of global supply, forget all the other things in this like grains, metals, oil etc which again is all impacted by the Russian influence and the war in Ukraine. Even if the Ukraine war ends we're hardly likely to suddenly start buying gas from Russia anytime soon. The Russians know this and beyond nuclear weapons it's their key lever to holding the world to ransom.

People really do think that we'll vote in a Labour government and suddenly inflation will be 0% and our £250pm bills will go back to £100pm but it's not going to happen. Nothing whatsoever is going to change, we need to bed in for the long haul because like it or not what people forget is that we're essentially at war with a major superpower.

The impact of this war is huge and even the risk of nuclear war has never been higher. We can't all sit here and moan about how expensive stuff is and just expect it to go away via a change of government.

Problem is who do you tax more to make up the shortfall ? The very wealthy have the means to avoid it, if you then put the burden on the middle rate tax payers then they will need to pay significantly more tax as there are considerably less in the 40% bracket.
To me the fairest way would be to increase VAT on non essentials and in particular luxury products. You are then taxing those more with the highest disposable income.
Of course the other obvious one is increasing capital gains tax in line with income tax, which again would be a progressive move.
Capital Gain & Inheritance Tax. The daily mail would love it...
