The Conservative Party

and don't forget the arts - so many people affected - venues closing - the ENO moved to Manchester for cost reasons ( welcomed in my view - I suspect the Tories think us up north are jam butties and flat caps and have no culture ) - my son and daughter graduated with degrees in the arts.................. both A's btw .......... there are virtually no opportunities in the arts and so many people have left - they reckon about 25 - 30% of their intake were from abroad and none have remained. They are thriving in their own countries or other countries. Plus recent events mean its unlikely things will get better. According to the DCM the arts contributed £109bn to the UK economy in 2021
Opera North will have new competition. They'll have to perform in London instead of the ENO.

NHS organisations and charities have warned that the Government's newly-announced ban on migrant care workers bringing dependents with them to the UK risks deepening the care sector's recruitment and retention crisis. NHS Providers described the new restrictions as "deeply concerning", while NHS Employers said the change would make "the job of caring for the most vulnerable members of society that bit harder". With shortages of around 120,000 staff in the NHS and more than 150,000 in the care sector, Caroline Abrahams, head of Age UK, said the charity is "worried that older and disabled people in need of care, and their families, will pay a heavy price for the government's changes to the migration rules".

I doubt Starmer has the balls to promise to reverse this lunacy (though hopefully he will when in power), but could the implementation be delayed by the courts or the Lords until after the next GE? - Is it just the desperate death throes of a dying government.

There will be opt outs for the care and health sectors and others no doubt. All Govt announcements are done for headlines these days and this latest wheeze will generate more negative stories if the Govt tried to enforce what they are proposing.

Personally, I think this Govt is hanging by a thread and the possibility of open revolt/civil war within the Tory party is underpriced. Its pretty much in Lord of the Flies territory.

There’s even a possibility it would be struck down by the courts, because even the initial requirement was only just about allowed if I remember rightly, as there’s a legal right to a family life enshrined in the human rights act. I may have forgotten some of the exact details there but that was the gist.

Don’t worry. Those sponging care workers aren’t a net contributor to the economy so we’ll be way better off without them.

Very well said. This situation has also highlighted for me the terrible state of the wages we have in this country. I don’t know if this always was the case, I’ve had the Tories my entire working life and I don’t remember it being any different.

It’s shocking that the £38k band covers most of our teachers, nurses, engineers, academics, junior doctors… some of those jobs take the best part of a decade to even qualify for… I have degrees in technical disciplines but I work (against my will) in financial services. Why? Because it is effectively the only industry in this country that reliably pays enough for somebody to actually have half a chance of saving for a decent retirement.
Yep, I've worked 13 years as an ESL teacher. It can be pretty well paid overseas, but in the UK, it's basically not far off a minimum wage job unless you can get a university job, at which point you might be lucky to get something in the 30k region pushing 40 in London if you're lucky.

So I'm currently doing a master's to be able to get a decent career when I go back to the UK. But I'm in this catch 22 situation now, because the career I'm training for doesn't really exist abroad. So I can either stay with my wife and basically waste 11 grand of tuition, or leave my wife and hope that I can get a job above the threshold, which would be possible but definitely not guaranteed. The jobs I see are very much in that region, and I'd be starting from something approaching scratch (it has a slight link to my current career).

Christ on a bike. The level of insanity from people in senior positions of responsibility in the last few days has been breathtaking. Just lies, spin, nonsensical bollocks, denial of accountability and the past and yet more decisions that are going to make life worse for a high percentage of folk in the UK.
Most countries we imagine to be our direct comparators would be on the streets now In mass protest.
