Something that is missed a lot of the time is that the scale and nature of Thatchers privatisation programme had never been done before. It was sold as a bold but 'sensible' thing to do. In reality the UK was treated as a giant petri dish by nutter economists and those who knew exactly what they could get out of it. You can tell how successful the experiment was by the stampede to replicate it across the rest of Europe, or not as the case may be.
