Always baffles me - MP's and outside jobs. They bitch and moan about how long the hours in the commons are and how late the house sits they still find time to do other jobs. I suppose the obvious answer is for the house to convene at 9am but that would restrict their availability for 2nd jobs. I don't imagine the board of the firm that hired him fancied holding meetings at 1am. If Mercer was my MP I'd be keen to ask him how he finds the time to spend 4 hrs a day working elsewhere - its not like his main job is part time and on minimum wage is it?
 
In Spain the far right party Vox have had a reasonably successful night. They have been celebrating in Plaza Margaret Thatcher in Madrid. Not sure quite what the Iron lady would make of it.

No one on here knows how the discussion went with Hislop.

It is always heavily edited and Mercer’s libel action against the BBC will also have severely restricted what could be broadcast under subjudice rules.

I thought it was 4 hours a week. You wouldn't get a Tory MP to work for £85k if they were having to put in a daily shift.

Not odd really I don’t know if posters had looked into/were aware of the story before the show. Also we know how some posters like to post based on their political viewpoint it’s almost a given with some on here. Unless you feel natural bias wouldn’t affect someone’s opinion of the guy we will have to disagree I guess.

I haven’t a clue what he has or hasn’t done but in terms of reaction to being called a liar by Hislop his reaction seemed perfectly normal. The fact he didn’t act like a normal politician isn’t a negative to me.
 
Mercer’s links to a company that sold scam bonds to 11,500 savers then went bust owing £236 million taking many people’s life savings with it were plastered all over the media well before HIGNFY.

Fair enough. I just thought he came across as a bit of a dick, regardless of which party he represents.

I get the decline in public services, which is hardly surprising after 8 years of cuts (which the electorate voted for in GE's, three times, btw).

But the "proof they look after their own" is a distorted perspective down to your own obvious prejudices.

Mayday promised to look after the JAM's.............however the result is the exact opposite. Sure I have my own views on the Govt but when the report states -

"Being born privileged means you are likely to remain privileged," said Dame Martina, who is also chief executive of the Prince's Trust.

The facts speak for themselves. Who has been running the show since 2014? Who's ideology is behind this? I look forward to you defending the need for inadequate care for the elderly and instigating plans that ensure that social mobility doesn't happen and the privileged are right to make sure they remain entitled at the expense of those less fortunate. Would be an entertaining read I bet.

I don't need to defend anything mate. I'm simply picking you up on your "looking after their own" nonsense. And I agree with you about Mayday's utter bollocks about looking after the JAMs. She's been an absolutely awful PM - easily the worst ever - and has failed at pretty much everything she's ever said or done. Utterly, utterly useless.

I'm not surprised you have a distorted perspective though, when you read the tripe coming out of the mouth of publications like the Guardian, week in, week out. For example, you might consider that the raising of the personal allowance by £1,000 which should be universally welcomed. This benefits pretty much everyone working and yet is criticised by the left as favouring higher rate tax payers (aka "the rich") since they pay 40% tax and "the poor" only pay 20%. Completely missing the fact that the poor didn't get 40% taken off them in the first place.

It is this sort of daft labour narrative - the kind which describes taking less of someone's money off them as "a giveaway" - which creates misconceptions about Tories looking after their own. Similarly, If you cut benefits, then people not receiving benefits in the first place are not affected. But that is hardly "looking after your own" is it. Not giving them something you weren't giving them previously.
