this was a truly shit day - sitting with the stoke fans trying not to get battered as each goal went in. Outside on the way to the car was bedlam with idiots from all over turning out to "batter city"... thankfully mental superiority and some bullshit about how we were at the match on freebie tickets managed to bamboozle the addled brains of a gang of quite a few idiots who surrounded us shouting "cummon, you're city aren't you" - the wankers ended up shaking our hands and wishing us good luck before disappearing to batter someone else.... cars with the windows out, doors smashed in and fighting all over the place, scummy little weasels.

york away, however was the real edge of the precipice, the bottom of the barrel, the lowest of the low......and that doesn't include standing next to a pissed curly watts for much of the second half!

I had a think about what was the real low point as a City fan, because m27 and you are right, it actually got worse.

York, Darlington away, Burnley, Wrexham, Lincoln home, etc.

I reckon the real low point was actually when Gillingham went 2-0 up.

...you could be right - though for me that was just numbness. The lowest part of that game was when we scored our first. I was kicking the seat in front screaming in a rather dillusional way that it was just shit, too f*cking late, not good enough, never going again, you good for nothing lazy shite wankers! (or something like that)

...two minutes later, however.....

I honestly really wasn't bothered, indifferent, in fact.

We were already pretty much down. It was never going to happen.

I think some City fans convince themselves this sort of thing just leapt up on us.

We had been conditioned for the best part of two years prior, the slide was on under Ball and Clark.

The club and team was rotten to the core. The only thing about that day was the City support, but hardly a surprise.

If anything, I consider days like that for the cameras, a sort of 'look what great fans we are'.

Relegation was the best thing that ever happened to us. It took us to the precipice, exactly where we needed to be if there was ever to be a new dawn.

There would be no ADUG without that so-called bad day.

The following season up until Christmas...now that was the precipice!!! We were fucking awful and going nowhere.

Step forward Messrs Morrison and Cooke. Our real saviours that season.

I was going to say, the real "bottom" for me was probably York away. That was when I realised that not only were we in the third division but we weren't even good enough for that division! Good job we turned it round eventually. Stoke away was awful though. Scary afterwards too, I think my wife nearly shat herself. I remember saying to her, "You can't just cack in your pants and hope it goes away."

I don't think Stoke's "Naughty Forty" would have been understanding enough to allow her time to get her socks off, either, Lance.

Brothers mate got tied to a bridge and set on fire that game lol

I remember that day very well - and we shouldn't forget it.

That day really hurt and we truly became the laughing stock, so when we think thinks are not going right for us just remember this.

Pundit says "A club full of history"

Thought we didn't have any history?

The pundit was Brian Marwood.....fuck, I was in bits that day.

Re: The Darkest Hour - 1998 Stoke relegation video

I was angry and depressed that our great club had sunk so low. The rags I knew thought we were dead and buried. It was a real badge of faith to show such loyal support down in the depths while they won everything. I never stopped believing that we would bounce back (except 2-0 down at Wemberlee) but if anything that whole experience made my love for City even stronger. Unbelievable where we find ourselves now :-)
