The dentist

Tbh I'm the same as you, not been to a dentist in years petrified at the thought of it but I know I will have to eventually.

Well done on overcoming your phobia and smile away, I may join you eventually.

Thanks mate I really appreciate that, I've often wondered why dentists don't offer a chaperone service I'm sure some people would really benefit from it ?.

I've had a crippling fear of the dentist for many years, so much so that I hadn't been for the best part of 10-12 years, then over the last couple of months my front teeth started showing signs of wear and then suddenly I lost three front teeth in quick succession, I had to summon up all my reserves just to make an appointment, 3 weeks ago I went along and to my horror she said I needed to have eight teeth removed, I couldn't possibly cope with that ??, I went along for some bits and bobs 2 weeks in a row and she was preparing me for the big event which was today, She was well aware that I'm off to Dubai / Abu Dhabi on business this Saturday and would be attending meetings and I couldn't go to those meetings looking like Albert Steptoe, anyway I've been wetting myself with fear all week knowing it was drawing near to the appointment and unbelievably I managed to go through with it and I have a great smile for the first time in years, now I know this is no big deal to some but it is a real phobia of mine and I believe I've cracked it and I'm proud of myself for facing my fears.

Not too sure why I'm posting this , just thought I'd share it and see if anyone has a similar story to tell ??.

You have had 11 teeth out but have a great smile? I'm lost a wee bit mate.

The three "lost" teeth were broken not out all together so they were included in the eight, part of the reason for building me up over the three weeks was to get my new teeth ready to be fitted as soon as the others were removed, they are on a pallet for now and when I get home from my trip I'm going to have permanent one's put in.

Nice one mate! I am well chuffed for you. I don't bother about going to the dentist, i'm not arsed, but my old man was the same. He hated needles, he used to pull his own out, rather than see a dentist. I am honestly made up for you.

I don't see the fear with dentists to be honest. It's not pleasant having someone scrape at your teeth and stuff, but it's got to be done.

I do however, hate my dentist, she's an annoying shite.

Every visit, every single visit, down to the very last word and sigh, and muttering goes like this:

"Morning, take a seat"
"OK thanks"
"Any problems?"
"No"
"OK, open wide. A1, A2, A3....etc. How often to you floss?"
(Me trying to speak with her fingers down my throat) "About once every two days when I can"
"OK, should try for every day, floss every day, stop this little bleeding in your gums. OK quick polish then...right, that's it, all done, just make another appointment in 6 months"
"OK thanks by"

Every single fooking time for 10 years. The decoration in the place hasn't changed in at least 25 years. However, the girls who work in there are a right collection of beauties.

I just hate my dentist because she annoys me. It does work though, I floss every day now just to shut the witch up. I do feel like pointing out that the human body has developed over thousands of years to be the amazing system were are, with DNA, amazing brain power, all the adoptions of your body to cope with various environments and situations...then why on earth to we have to pick food from our teeth with a piece of floss? Really, the human body is that imperfect? Have a word...

I think its maybe down to experiences Scall.

As a child (in the 70's) my dentist was unsympathetic and a bit of a butcher and that alone has given me a phobia about dentists that exist to this day.

I'm now in my 40's and have been to dentists on and off throughout my life - basically if I don't need to go......... then I don't go!!

I know I need at least one filling and I know it isn't going to get any better and so will have to pluck up courage at some point to go........ but it scares me!!!

The ironic thing is, my daughter cannot understand my fear, as dentists over the last few years have become much more tolerant and sympathetic to people's phobia's, so my daughter know's no difference..........and she is now a trainee dental nurse!!

Credit to the OP for plucking up courage

i need some work doing.

yeah, I know times are hard economically and with the waiting list and everything you might not be quick to get in - but here's an answer to getting sorted right now, and you don't even need to travel further than your own front door:
