Wanted to try and a cheese and potato pie today but none in stock at my nearest food kiosk, even before kickoff.

So I got the £2.70 (or so) chips... a small cup that was about half full. I literally got around 12 or 13 chips. They were nice but I paid about 24p per chip. :)

£0.24p per chip. Is that sustainable in the long term? I don't think so. The fans have already voted with their feet today.
It doesn't look good for Jamie's 'food revolution' unfortunately.
The invisible hand of the market will intervene, TGR. I thought a good Thatcherite like you would appreciate that.

Morning GDM!

I think it is more a case of Price Elasticity of Demand rather than just Supply / Demand.

The break even point for JO's operation at the Etihad will not be inconsiderable.
When measured against his other highly successful and profitable operations will
it be worth his time and effort?

Got in the ground at 12.30 and mrs sf decided to go for a pie
First kiosk had sold out, then so had the second she went to, finally got one at the third attempt
Running out of food before the game is ridiculous

I think they forget that lunchtime kickoffs are the ones you are most likely to sell food

Morning to you too TGR :-)

The elasticity argument isn't without merit, but it has to be countered against the ability of the retail operation in the ground to serve the customers, which they still appear to be struggling with. If that can be sorted then I believe that a relatively modest drop in price, given the product on offer, would lead to a significant increase in sales - if, as I have said, they can cope with the demand.

Our match going fan base is still pretty much unchanged - mainly (in-work) working class - and ongoing increases in ticket prices and petrol means they are even more price sensitive than hitherto, but decent pies at slightly lower prices would make a big difference imo.

As usual on the money GDM.
There is no doubt that a 'correction' in pricing is required. With the demographic of our fan base you mention I believe circa £5 is the level for a 'gourmet' pie.
As you know I will follow this closely and see how it pans out :-)

I hope they don't drop the prices of the pies before the Derby ;-)

Interesting comment in there about them "...selling out of pies..." which possibly negates the price elasticity argument - surely if too expensive fuck all would be sold?

I have to agree squirty to run out of pies at 12.30 is blatant poor planning / forecasting. I think it's due to the fact they completely over estimated the demand at the Newcastle game and that's why they were giving them away at the end of the game. Therefore they were literally giving away their profit! So the response has been to reduce the amount of food available fairly dramatically. But clearly they screwed it up badly - again.

A bit similar to being on an Easyjet flight - unless you are sitting in rows 1 - 8 the chances of getting what you want off the menu card are pretty slim. However the boys in the planning / logistics department go around slapping each other on the back and telling everyone they sell out on every flight and never have to throw any food away! Whilst the boys in sales are hanging their heads in despair at the missed sales / profit opportunity.

I guess they will eventually get it right but it will take time.

-- Sun Sep 01, 2013 9:52 am --

I have heard young Jamie is planning a 'free pie day' for the derby. :-)

Not exactly strongbow. As GDM points out it is a balance of supply & demand coupled with price elasticity.
If they only have half a dozen pies available they will obviously sell out very quickly! However the 'opportunity cost' of potential lost sales is significant.

This is why I always wanted to be an economist - you can never be wrong!
The time honoured answer to any question ever asked of them is: 'it depends'
How good would that be?!

Fuck! I missed a trick at school. Gonna try that one on Mrs Bow next times she says "don't you think you're drinking too much?" :))

I had a steak mince pie this afternoon. Very nice. Not too expensive. But I ordered a meat and potato!
Didn't you know by the shape before you bit in?
It was claimed at the Newcastle game that the pies weren't the traditional shapes and the serving slaves were struggling to tell them apart.
