Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

Well after all of the fanfare, the promotion and the hype just what was the reality of the new Jamie Oliver catering at the Etihad last night? Read on for a full, unbiased and objective review:

I arrived at the stadium early around 6.30pm and had a beer in City Square. The food / burger vans outside the stadium do not appear to have changed their livery but from what I can gather they were selling ‘natural organic beef burgers’ so I presume they were part of the JO revolution but this needs to be confirmed.

Being a hungry Horace I entered the stadium at circa 7.00pm ready to put Jamie’s offering thru their paces:
The new branding, signage and livery of the JO food outlets is shown below:

Fairly distinctive and nothing radical but just how far can you go with these things so overall an improvement on the previous food outlets at the ground.

Obviously at this time the stadium was quiet and the food was fresh so time to dive in and confront the moment of truth…
My first tasting experience was one of JO’s new ‘Steak & Ale’ pies which was a bruising £5.50! However, I have to say it was good. Very good!

The pastry was crisp, flaky and tasty. It contained decent chunks of steak and a rich gravy. Couldn’t really taste the ‘ale’ part of the pie but overall it has to be said it was a cut above the previous offerings and one of the best, if not THE best pie I have eaten at a football ground (and I have eaten a few!) in my 45+ years of watching the Blues The cost of £5.50 is a whopping +44% over the traditional ‘Peppered Steak’ or ‘Meat & Potato’ pie at £3.80 so significantly more than the ‘nominal’ increase we were told to expect. However, you get what you pay for and this pie delivered hence TGR’s rating of 9 / 10.

The menu also had a Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie (which to be fair is different) at £5.50 and a Rainbow Vegetable Pie also at £5.50. So a decent variety of offerings.
My quest for knowledge and applied research was now in full swing! So it just had to be a Hot Dog…
I plumped for the ‘BBQ Dog with Pork’ at a price of £6.50 – ouch! (A standard Hot Dog with onions being a flat £5.00). Again not cheap by any standards but again the tucker was good!

A fresh, warm bread roll which actually had some taste! A million miles away from the old, doughy, cardboard tasting bread rolls of yesteryear. The ‘Dog’ itself was also good. Tasty and with a good texture. Pieces of pulled pork on top and a line of ketchup to finish it off. In terms of value for money I will next time go for the standard Dog with onions and save myself £1.50 but again it has to be said JO appears to have nailed it so it receives a high TGR rating of 8 out of 10.

I was on a roll and somebody had to do this job so again purely in the name of research my quest continued…

Time to test the chips! I went for the ‘Chips & Curry Sauce’ at not an inconsiderable £3.50 for a what is a relativey small portion of chips which is served in a plain paper / cardboard cup – so lacking a little on the presentation.

Jamie, oh Jamie! Oh dear, dear, dear! How could you get it just so wrong? Unfortunately I have to report this offering was awful. Truly dreadful. The chips simply had no taste, unless you like eating cardboard? I honestly think the paper cup would have had more taste! Its clear that Curry sauce is not a Jamie speciality either. It was a congealed mess, again with virtually no taste whatsoever. Being somewhat of a connoisseur of chips & curry I simply couldn’t face it and without a word of a lie after 4 or 5 chips I dumped the lot into a waste basket on the concourse. Sadly on the TGR scale it only hit a very lowly 1out of 10. Significant room for improvement. Jamie… sort it!

After the disaster with the chips I’m sure you’ll understand I couldn’t face a burger but again in the name of research I did canvass the opinion of a couple on the concourse who were tucking in to one each. The feedback was good. Again, fresh, tasty food but they did raise a concern over the prices which are: Beefburger £6.10 (comes with a slice of cheese & lettuce). A Bleu Cheeseburger at £6.60 and a Chicken Burger is a flat £6.00.
A couple of other small things to note: There were no napkins or plastic forks offered or on the counter when I purchased the food and had to go back and ask for them which for some reason were hidden under the counter? Put this small thing down to teething.
There didn’t appear to be any noticeable difference in the queues at half time and on Level 1 I certainly didn’t see any of the ‘Beer Buggies’ going around but maybe elsewhere in the ground they could have been?

The staff were good and showing a marked improvement over last year. No doubt Jamie’ s Customer Service training has kicked in and they were bright, helpful and all smiles – so credit where it is due for that too. Obviously this was day 1 so you would expect things to be pretty much spick & span and on the button along with one or 2 small niggles. Can the standard be maintained week in – week out for the next 9 months? That is the real challenge and it will not be easy. However, plaudits should go to the club for the efforts and not inconsiderable investment they have made on behalf of the match going fans.

To briefly summarise:

With the exception of the chips, which really do need to be seriously looked at in terms of quantity, presentation, taste and value for money urgently as they were truly awful the rest of it is good and to be fair as far as football stadium catering goes it is very good. It is a marked improvement over anything previous at Maine Road or the Etihad and that should be applauded. Due to the unmitigated and serious disaster with the chips the overall TGR rating is 7 out of 10.

Footnote:

If you are reading this GDM and no doubt you are ;-) You won the bet - I owe you a pie! I will gladly purchase this and formally present it to you at the next home game. Please let me know where you wish to meet in the stadium and at what time.

Re: The Food

Can't believe how quickly they ran out of Strongbow in 109. Those new 'trays' are shite as well, saw a few people lose 4 pints when they snapped.

On the food side, i had a Chicken Balti and i thought it was very nice. My mate bought the Cheeseburger at £4.90, said it was nice if a bit on the small side.

Re: The Food

I would suggest either a table for two or a less formal position at the bar at Chiccetti's. Try the baked sweet potato with star anise, the spicy italian sausage, twice cooked pork belly and perhaps even a simple selection of flat breads, oil and balsamic.
Wash it down with a couple of pints of Moretti and a decent bottle of red and get a taxi to the match - easy.

I dont see the need for grabbing food in the ground unless you can only make it 5 minutes before kick off and you havent eaten all day. There are plenty of option beforehand in town and around the ground, or just eat at home before you set off.
There is no way i would be paying over £6 for a burger that isnt served on a plate with some chips next to it!
Same goes for beer too really, i very rarely get a pint inside the ground because of the quality and price. I dont understand why everything inside stadiums has to be so shit and so expensive, one or the other please!

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

good review! I have to agree with you on the chips and curry......absolute dreadful, and for £3.50 they are a rip off for the amount you get.

also why don't we have the fancy burger/food decoration in the south stand? im sure its just plain concrete apposed to your first pictures.

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

I got a free steak pie upon exit from a lovely lady with a tray full, in more ways than one. All in all, a pleasurable experience.

Thanks TGR, I've been waiting with baited breath for your comments, but I certainly wasn't expecting such a comprehensive report. You seem to have an even bigger appetite than me

Due to pressure of time, rather than lack of appetite, I didn't have the opportunity to sample as much of the menu as you, but I did have a burger and it was pretty good, and in stadium catering terms, very good. No cheeseburgers, just plain, though. The service was unimproved though, which was disappointing and annoying in equal measure. It has to be said, however, that the club seem more focused on the catering generally so I would expect this to improve. Rolling out a new menu is never a problem-free process.

I think the prices are an issue and I believe a quid or so less on key items (e.g pie & burger) could make a significant positive difference to sales and increase the overall net profitability of the catering operation. That said, as long as the service remains poor this theory will not be capable of testing.

My lad had a pie which he said was very good, but I wasn't sat with him so I couldn't confirm or dent that, but I guess I'll find that out at the next game - I'm not going to Hull, but I hope and expect to be at the Derby, so I'll PM you nearer the time and thank you for being such a gent :-)

I might even buy you a pint if you're lucky.

Re: The Food

I was in very early doors and had a look at Level 2 as well as my own Level 3. Agree with most that £4.50 for a burger is a tad pricey but I thought it was lovely compared to the garbage they have served up in the past.

Had a couple of scoops before kick-off and you could see the queues were no better than last season. I'll put it down to teething problems. Lot of new staff needing to get used to a live situation and none of these training days. Nothing like the real thing for experience. It does appear that the club are listening and there were lots of supervisors making notes. Given time I think they will get it sorted.

Said to missus at the time that BM would go into meltdown over queues and prices and I was proven to be correct. For anyone moaning about the prices, go into town and see what a gourmet burger would cost you - I wager twice as much but not double the quality. People need to understand, football fans are a captive market, if you want catering at the stadium there is a price to pay. Stadia catering isn't looking for a Michelin star.

We all have a choice, if you don't like the quality oir the price - don't buy it.

Re: The Food

Asked for a blue burger but told there was only white cheese, had plain burger which was very nice and no greasy aftertaste. Mate asked for steak pie only to find it was chicken and leek but said it was very tasty. Staff were a bit nervy (104) and unsure but guess that's to be expected on the first day. I'm happy to pay the bit extra if I know the ingredients are local and food is produced locally, rather than some processed meat that's come halfway across europe.

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

So how much did the rubber tongued mockney wanker bung you for such a glowing review ? Five fifty for a pie? I pity those of you who take the family on an empty stomach

Great review, I want a pie now lol

Re: The Food

£4.50 for a burger in this day and age is fairly average if its decent. Same with the pies and all that.

If its not decent then send it back like you would anywhere else where you pay a fair price.

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

I had to wait 15 minutes at the till for my chips... only to then be told the gas has stopped working so they couldn't cook my chips. This was at the one near block 202. It was a joke to be honest.

But once i actually received some food, it was nice.

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

I went to one of those blue ones (first picture) and I think they are more expensive than the rest as I noticed a different one a bit further down which had much better prices (still more expensive than last year though). It also had different options on the menu like Chicken Balti and pulled pork etc

Also, why does Chips with curry sauce cost £0.80 more than just chips? Is this the sauce that contains the much coveted ITK knowledge?

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

Whilst I agree you pay a bit more for quality, I dont think £6.50 can be justified for a hot dog with pulled pork.
A hot dog sausage of the highest quality would cost around 25pence. Your bread bun would cost around 6pence and the pulled pork lets say 25 pence as the hot dog. So thats 56 pence cost, how can this translate to £6.50? Its not just the new food with this problem either, the old hot dogs (the rubber ones) cost 3pence to buy and were priced at £5. We were already being ripped off and raising the prices more is nothing short of disgraceful.

Re: Jamie Oliver Food At The Etihad – The Truth!

Well, I can leave home slightly earlier, call at a chippy and off license not too far away from the stadium, procure a fish chips and curry sauce, plus a tinny of Red Stripe or similar, sit in the car and devour and the cost will be less than a fiver
Stadium food is for emergencies only and at those prices if I'm caught in an emergency situation I think I'll be leaving the stadium hungry
£5.50 for a fucking pie and £3.50 for a portion of chips!!!!!!!!!
