The General Election Thread

One thing you can guarantee is that the Tories will not have an overall majority by the end of the parliament. They need to get their most controversial legislation (eg boundary changes and EVEL) passed in the first couple of years. No doubt there will be some Tories demanding that the repeal of the foxhunting ban should be their main priority.

I think it would be a huge mistake for the Tories to assume the result means a ringing endorsement of their welfare and spending policies. For me its been about the SNP and lack of credibity of the Labour leadership. I still think most people probably prefer Labour's economic programme, or at least some elements of it.

Shame about our ex MP Mark Hunter who was beaten last night, decent guy and a season ticket holder at City. I had a lot of time for him.
Fellow blueJohn Leach lost out in Manchester Withington but Ivan Lewis won comfortably in Bury South.
If it was possible to vote just for the person alone I would've voted for him.

Good was getting sick of Farage tbh, his practised smile holding an untouched pint. Fuck off and tell us your policies.
I hate this promotional crap they all do.

clegg, miliband and farage all finished

Balls too.

theres going to be a lot of change. I think overall labour have done the worst especially for a party in opposition. i dont see them having anyone really to replace miliband

Ed Balls' missus I heard, not joking either

Why not get David Milliband back?

Probably Tweedledee. Although it would be nice to see Alexander or Reeves get it.

Post the Hillsborough enquiry he'll have nothing to offer

I voted Tory but do think that David Milliband would have given myself and others a real choice......

Again I will repeat it's virtually unheard of for an incumbent government to be booted out in the first election the reality is that whilst I disagree with some Tory policy they had not reached the point that Brown and Major reached, they are still unpopular in the North of the country and this should be a wake up call to them,
Wake up call? Seeing as the 'closest election in history' has resulted in a Conservative majority, I think it's Labour who need to wake up.
They failed because Ed moved them, or tried to, to the left, to appease the likes of Mcluskey of the unions. Blair realised years ago that this was not the type of politics England favoured, so his new Labour managed to win three on the trot, and even now, some Labour supporters fail to grasp this, still believing a leftist government is what the people want. They never have, and, hopefully, never will.

Great post. Maybe I'm being too simplistic but Labour could still get a lot of voters back onside in the future without having to veer too far to the left. Most people in this country these days are moderately left, centre, or moderately right of centre and have no appetite for politics that is too far to the left or right. Whoever thought Labour could get the populist vote by reverting back to socialist ideals in this day and age is deluded. They picked the wrong Milliband to lead their party in 2010.

Didn't hear that. Only leaves Reeves I'd have much respect for then and I don't see that happening.

even with david miliband i dont think labour would have won. its the economy thats the winning vote imo and on that the people think the conservatives have done well
