Attracting new support and being fair to the proper fans are not mutually exclusive imo.
However, for me there are some worrying signs coming out of the club around this subject.
I don't care if they want to 'expand the global brand'.
Go ahead. It makes no difference to me. If I see legions of Malaysians or even Cockneys all of a sudden wearing City shirts I'll just see it as I see it when I see the same groups wearing rag shirts. A joke. People with no connection to the club or city but who are attracted purely by the opportunity to attach themselves to perceived success.
I will pity them but it has zero affect on my support or going to matches.
But what I don't like the sound of is the likes of the surveys that were, allegedly (it was bollocks in truth) used to justify the season ticket revamp/fiasco.
Those surveys, especially the more recent one were not really focused on fans as they claimed. The questions were all based around people who don't regularly go to matches, who aren't proper supporters, but might decide to go more if there are more hotdogs or more face painting or more corporate shite. That's how the questions were angled and it is a bad sign imo.
The fact that they were ready to fuck off so many loyal fans at such short notice with the season tickets joke changes. The fact that a club willing to throw silly money at agents, sponsors, corporate partners and average players is so keen to shaft the fans with such big increases, it's all a bit worrying imo. Regardless of how many people Garry Cook gladhands or buys a drink.
I might be wrong. They might do it right and attract a load of mug gloryhunters whilst being fair to the proper fans. It's definitely not impossible. But one or two of the signs, so early on, leave me wondering. We can only wait and see.
