The home brew thread

Ok, up to page 7 now.

Head is spinning so will come back to it this weekend.

Taxi, or whoever, I'm gonna start by doing a St. Peters IPA, 32 pinter, tell me, what exactly, equipment-wise, do I need for a successful attempt?

Don't leave anything out, I'll order it or pick it up tomorrow or this weekend!

On the rank so bear with me.
Come back about one-ish

Coopers ipa is also a very safe bet for your first brew.
Single malt kit and makes 40 pints.
Less money too but still a great kit with good reviews

What equipment do you have ?
Anything or are you batting from from scratch ?

Dont be overwhelmed.
Simplicity in itself.
Cheese on toast was tricky the first time around ; )

Just picked up ...
Gotta go

This is my Yorkshire harvest bitter. Slipping down way too easily this evening!

Right piss-cans,
Just been to Wilko in sunny Droylsden and purchased:
1.7kgCoopers Aussie lager kit. £10.50 (green top)
25ltrFermenter bin £7
1kg brewing sugar £1.50
1 Hydrometer £2.50
1 long plastic spoon £1
1 syphon kit £2
1 bottle brush £1.50
100g bruclens and steriliser £1
Total £25 ish.

As I'm off to wembley tomorrow I won't be starting my new hobby until next weekend.
Is there anything else I need to buy before I get the ball rolling?
cheers in advance pissers!

Just the bottles buddy!!!! Happy brewing.

Currently sipping down in my coopers draught kit with added dme, brewed with 1.2kg of fermentables all in all. Very nice sessionable lager at 4.8%. Can't wait to taste the wilko pilsner, but early taste is positive. Happy home brew evening all.

BILBO wake up mate I'm back .....
Here's the two kits that fit the bill.

Great shame you don't like the real ales as all the twin malt kits from Milestones and Woodfordes are currently selling for under £16 .
Names that are carved in glory in the halls of home brew fame.
Nelsons Revenge,Wherry,Headcracker,Nog,DonnerundBlizzed and Dasher the Flasher.

Its not cheap if you don't like it though.
Its like you telling me sprouts are reduced down to 45p a kilo : (

The St peters IPA and The brew master IPA from the Coopers stable.

Best online price generally for the St Peters is around the £20 mark
This as explained previously is a two tin malt kit requiring no additions.

The Coopers is a single malt kit but can be purchased between £10 to £13
You will need extra fermentables for this one.
The kit instructions recommend 500g light malt extract and 300 dextrose (brewing sugar)
The general consensus from senior online brew masters is that it really requires a little more.
An increase to around 1k light malt extract with 250g brewing sugar to give more depth and flavour.
This would take your cost up to the price of the Saint Peters IPA which is classed as a premium kit.

The Saint Peters requires much less papping about
But if you are a pap happy type of chappy then kick your off your shoes slip on your black cowl n robe tie off your white cord belt and have a look at our real grand master brewer in action.

The extra hopping at boil is not required .
Personal taste.
The kits are made to a set recipe at the factory and do come pre-hopped
He is just demonstrating for those palates that require a more hoppy flavour.

Basic equipment required Bilbo is on page 12
This will make you thousand s of gallons if treated with love.
You will need two buckets one preferable with tap.
If not then a syphon for transferals.

Got to go mate.

See you later in the film
Taxi;

Thanks Taxi....

I like real ales too, dunno why you didn't think that? Or maybe I wrote something to that effect, I am getting old and forgetful !

Sorry Bilbo I misunderstood you.

To keep things simple and get your first brew safely under your belt
I heartily recommend the Camra winner Woodies Wherry as it ticks the right boxes .
Check out the previous pages on here for the reviews and information.
Its still on offer at Wilko and similar to St Peters does not require anything but the included yeast and water adding.
Not trying to steer you clear of the IPA brews mate so obviously feel free to have a nibble and wet your whistle.

Very drinkable after around five to six weeks.
Absolute thrashing tackle after eight !
It will make you happy beyond imagination of that I am sure.
Enjoy the game blue !

Is there any way of upping the alcohol level, more sugar perhaps? I must admit, I do prefer 5-6% ales rather than the 4% mark.

right my first go at it with the wherry is on. Just followed instructions used still spring water 3 quid from lidl, I bought a kit from wilkos with the fermenter bucket and a pressure barrel 27 quid. Put cans in water to soften I guess, then boiled a kettle let it cool a bit sterilised the bucket and spoon, as per instructions, then added the cans and 3.5 litres of boiling water, stirred , added cold water stirred, and added the little yeast packet, put lid on. that was it.. ... so will let you all know if anything happens.. many thanks all bumble
