The IRA

I've not made a thread to respect any atrocities of the British army john.

And warrington was nothing but a soft cowardly target.

I'd swing for those cowards.

Yes, I know you haven't. This isnt a thread I started nor would have started either.

The Warrington bombings, omagh all of them were attrocities. Not excusing those that planted the bombs by any means as if you plant a bomb the potential for it to kill is always there. However warnings were given. I am not saying that this makes it acceptable before you accuse me of that - just saying that it says to me that the people werent the primary target. Now Warrington police would never expected such an attack and probably werent capable of dealing with it anyway- which is why I presume you have singled out that in particular - and id agree with you.

But does that mean London and Manchester bombings are acceptable as warnings were given and therefore loss of life was avoided. Not at all as the potential for innocents dying was possible. I am possibly coming across as an IRA supporter and have been accused of that already, which im most certainly not, im just not a fan of the British army either

The first regiments that went in were English units and didn't have a scooby what the fuss was about. They didn't understand "sectarian divide".
They were withdrawn and Scottish regiments (predominantly Protestants from West Coast Scotland) sent in and all hell was let loose against the Irish Catholics, this has happened many times going back Queen Elizabeth 1st.
English squaddies only turned against the local Catholic community when they witnessed/heard about atrocities against fellow squaddies (often from Special Branch from RUC- 99.9% Protestant)

So what's the thread about mate?

Why bring this up eh? What's the point other than to be provocative?

It's obviously a topic of interest and the only thing I hoped to provoke was debate.

It was interesting spending time in what was a battle ground the last time I was there and seeing the changes in people's way of life. There was actually some respect expressed for the British soldiers who went out on foot patrol around crossmaglen - they were brave lads, no doubt. There was another level to the troubles which was about direct armed contacts, often with supported IRA snipers.

Just to be clear, I have not, and never will, defend the deliberate bombing of civilian targets. I think it is disgusting.

i have another mate many years ago that went out on patrol......the lad behind him in the squad was sniped in the neck from a civilian house taken over by the IRA

that fucked my mate up for a long while...he went awol amongst other things and ended up in colchester army nick for 3 years

Sniping 18 year old lads doing a fucking job, in the back on their first tour 4 months fresh out of school is fine though?

Let's throw some controversy in then...

As a member of any armed force, isn't death an occupational hazard? And please don't confuse that with any "so they deserve to die do they?" type nonsense.
