Historically, dukes, marquesses, earls and barons always had a least a small one. That's why medieval noble households were almost exclusively male. (Sorry, contrary to Hollywood, no buxom serving wenches fetching your venison. It would be a bloke who could turn into a soldier at an hour's notice.)They were originally part of the British Army, not since they got disbanded and reraised though.
If I was a duke, I’d absolutely have my own private army!
