As a comparatively well-off pensioner, I ran my figures through the Daily Fail's budget calculator and to my surprise, it said I would be over £500 better off. I assume this is because I don't have an electric car or a 2 million quid house, and because of the promised fuel cost reduction and pension upgrade.

Obviously, not everyone will be so lucky, but for someone not on the breadline, I found it an OK outcome. For many weeks, I had been led to believe that we were all going to be losing so much extra that we'd have to exist on rainwater and cabbage soup.

I do think the media is going out of its way to fill people with inchoate anger. Frankly, the UK has seen far worse times.

As to the calibre of politicians - I'd not do their job for twice the money. You are every moron's Aunt Sally, and need the skin of 20 rhinos armed in proof. I wouldn't last a week. Not least because I'd end up blobbing some ****.

Not sure why I’d take offence, mate, we’re on here to debate. This is probably where I’m at cross-wires. I don’t accept, because there has been no source to confirm the detail, the premis that the ‘government briefed’ the detail.

If there is evidence out there to confirm that premis then I am all ears/eyes, but nobody in government, or the media, has given real detail of where it came from. A couple of points:

1. Was there an actual briefing by anybody or was it an assumption due to her pre-budget speech?

2. If the government briefed what the media reported, why were the government still stating that their manifesto pledge to not raise income tax, was ‘Iron clad’?

All very confusing but can only go off what we see and hear, or the lack of, in some cases.

1, there are no assumptions on my behalf.
2, it wasn’t really the government leaking this information, once it was out there they couldn’t put it back in the box. I suspect they may have leaked the u turn but that is a guess on my part.

They came in because the last government were atrocious and nearly crippled the country.

Genuine suggestion here: if Reeves wants to catalyse some growth and the government need a popular boost, scrap the 3pm blackout.

Without doxxing myself, my local is very blue. Big screen, City stuff behind the bar, gets very busy when City are on tv.

I couldn’t make it to the game today as I was busy til the second half so I ended up watching the match on my phone in the pub. They used to show 3pm games on snide Sky but like every where else, these days it’s not worth the risk.

In there were about 3 FOCs and me, that’s it.

Had the game be ok Sky the place would’ve been rammed.

That same picture is repeated in every suburb of every town and city across the country. This medieval law is killing pubs.

Binning off the 3pm blackout would be an easy ‘populist’ win and would also give the hospitality industry a much needed helping hand.

I think they also need to cut VAT for the sector but that’s another fight.

Yes, I get that countries collapse like that, but they aren't bankrupt. Governments create money when they need it. Hyperinflation is the result when it gets out of hand, but they aren't bankrupt in the sense you or I would be if we ran out of money and couldn't service our debts. We cant, as individuals, create money.

I believe the Weimar Republic (the one that that directly led to the rise of Hitler and those pictures of Germans pushing wheelbarrows of cash to buy a loaf, due to hyperinflation) never actually went bankrupt. I'm with you, the article is nursery level economics (why can't we just print more and more and more money daddy?) and possibly (hopefully) a piss take.

That said, if we did crash the economy really, really, badly and ended up with hyperinflaion and millions of jobless then we would have the opportunity to do what Roosevelt did in the USA, the new deal. I think Hitler also turned around the German economy by virtually doing the exact same thing in the 1930s but that is probably best left alone!

That would kill lower division and league football even more than they’ve already done.

I'm not. Modern Monetary Theory puts forward a similar but not identical view. I merely put it out there as why some may have a view that a country that prints it's own currency cant go "bankrupt" in the true sense of the word. Richard Murphy does seem to be gaining some traction in the media recently.

I did, however say we don't ever want to be in a position like this.
