The Labour Government

There's an old saying. The left has great ideas, that can only be put into practice by the right. If you tax the rich, they will move their companies. Companies that employ tens of thousands of people in the county.

There has to be a balance, but it will never be reached as long as the fringe on both sides stops getting so much attention.

At the moment we are going through a leftist woke moment, just as in the past we have been through conservative ideals and big business and industry. We need both sides to actually denounce the fringes of politics (the left is far worse, using victimhood isn't a solution) to actually do something

That's why I'm a centrist.
Centrist my arse.

Cohabitation ? Why do 2 young people living together need more than one bedroom. As regards the numbers, however unlikely, the whole other 60% could be undecided, it doesn't say.
Because the assumption is that they plan to expand that household. Why do two old people need more than one bedroom?

Have a look at the housing benefit rates for young people? Under 35 is a HMO rate. Not enough to get you a studio. Why is it fair that older people aren't subject to the same conditions?

Look we can go around in pointless circles with this, but people will downsize if and when they want. They have worked, paid their money and earned the right to stay in their "oversized" houses for as long as they like. If they want to spend their last mortal days there and be carried out in a coffin its nobody else's business than that of the individual.

The house will be available at that point for a family, assuming they can afford it, to do as they want.

Supply and demand set the price, if people start downsizing, the price of starter properties will increase making them even more unaffordable for people earlier in their career on smaller salaries and the larger properties wont get significantly cheaper as they will always command a higher price than that of a smaller property in a given area.

The only workable solutions are:

To build more houses and prevent people and companies buying them off plan to rent out.

Having some form of tax relief for young families related to mortgage payments.

The latter however is likely to cause consternation with people who maybe cant have children or dont want them.

I have a son who is 20. I know and he knows its going to be difficult to get on the housing ladder but thats just the reality of the world we live in and is also true across most of northern Europe. Trying to unpick years of insufficient house building and pretty much free money could take 10 to 20 years.

And it might be a good idea to adjust things by a devaluation of existing housing stock to correct the free money and other tricks to incestivise downsizing.

It's a finite resource. If we can encourage older people to take up a lower carbon footprint and usage of land and have more accessible housing and more heat efficient they might even live longer.

It's also necessary to encourage families to grow. Something necessary if we want to have less immigration.

To coin a phrase ... Lol

And they say the right can't do comedy.

At the moment we are going through a leftist woke moment,
Haha. That is laughable. Tell the pensioners that removing their WFA is woke.
Tell those geuinely ill whose benefits are being targeted that the Gauleiters are woke. Tell the asylum seekers detained for years or released to live under a flyover, with no solution in sight that their total lack of rights is woke.
Tell Starmer his mantra of no pain no gain is so woke. Yeah, we have a real bunch of woke comedians in charge.
Where is the compassion?

The left aren't compassionate, they are deluded. There is an answer in your quote somewhere. Should I point it out, or do you not do economics?

You need a lie down. I said nothing about the left, nor did my post include a quote other than the one I was replying to.

I have a 2 up 2 down house that I moved into 35 yrs ago when I downsized after divorce. I worked damned hard to pay for this and I have fantastic neighbours and it’s in a nice area.
Plus, and to me this was the clincher when my family wanted me to move 2 yrs ago, I trust my doctor and I get fantastic care from my doctor. So why should I have to move?
It’s my home, I’ve paid for it, I pay for any repairs I ask no one for money.
I earned my State pension by working from 15 (school leaving age then) and paid into my teachers pension.
So I will not be told by anyone, including the government, to give up my home. Even if it were a larger house I wouldn’t because that is my right. It is my home bought and paid for so leave us older pensioners alone. Stop blooming picking on us.
Thank you, rant over.
We are not asking for a hand out just a peaceful last few years. Grant us that at least.
Have I missed something? Who's making you move?

Never waste a good rant on something that won't happen.
