The Labour Government

Let's see if your "if" materialises

I appreciate it might not happen but you don’t fancy calling it ahead of time rather than just toeing the party line at the time and spinning whatever they say?

She’s gone rogue on this and he will be right to act IMHO. That action will be either be Rayner and Haigh will offer an apology in the hope that brings it to a close or Haigh will take the fall.

tories were still blaming brown government 14 years after their own fuck ups so pot kettlse and all that guff

Of course they will, it’s politics. A governments job is to leave the country in a better place than when they arrived, if you don’t continue to remind us of what you inherited (even if there is a large element of creative license) how will voters measure it?

The daft thing is if it wasn’t for the fuck ups this government could put their feet up having already left their country in a better place with the renters bill and extra working rights. Unfortunately they’ve fucked in with the daft WFA policy - the freebies etc is really just them getting used to being in government which they should be learning from - the WFA is the biggest issue.

Starmer, who is alrady being called a stooge of lobbyists and the rwp are pushing the he hates the common person angle on him.

The 1billion figure is a lie and again was pushed by a rw gobshite to show labour up as anti-business, the majority of the public agree P&O are cunts the investment angle wouldn't damage labour in the public eye, backing a bad employer over your ministers though does

The majority do think P&O are cunts. The problem is we need the investment to grow our economy- not because the £1bn matters in itself - it’s what it gives the UK more generally in terms of port capacity.

You do have a point on how the RW press are digging in to this, Grant Shapps also said to boycott back in 2022 and I don’t recall it being a news item for days. That might be because whoever was PM was fucking up even more at the time of course but it does have an element of hypocrisy about it.

The way they treated employees was disgraceful. Labour are bringing in legislation to outlaw it. Well done Labour, it’s good legislation. It’s done, the battle is won.

It is politically naive to then call them a rogue company (apparently a different word to describe them had been signed off by No 10) and encourage people to boycott them. A better statement would have been “we’ve brought through legislation to bring an end to some of the less acceptable practices we’ve seen in recent years and I look forward to working with P&O in the future” (assuming she was asked a direct question about P&O).

Starmer isn’t backing her. So if Starmer sacks her (aka she resigns) who are you going to back/ criticise? Will Starmer be wrong? Or will Haigh be in the wrong for saying it?

I know it's different when you're in power but Shapps went "rogue" and even Johnson didn't sound keen on what P&O did, but Starmer’s problem here is... well, what Starmer said at the time.

There is zero wrong with what he said at the time or has done on this since they got to power. It’s consistent. Like you say there is a difference being in power as your words matter. Anyroad Sky are saying DP will attend next weeks investment summit so let’s see if it rumbles on or not.

Haigh has had her rebuke and maybe that’ll be the end of it. Of course the Sunday political programmes will be full of questions about it but I suppose it’s a break for them from questions on Taylor Swift tickets. Be a good test for Starmer how he navigates this - especially as his new top team are controlling the communication. The quick distancing No 10 from the comments felt different to how things were handled before - we will get a sense of how ruthless they plan to be if Haigh is still in a job in a couple of weeks. I read Starmer was being pressed by his new team to reorganise his cabinet but I can’t see them rushing in to that given it’ll look poor.

If Starmer is in a position where he needs a cabinet reshuffle after only 100 days in power, he’s got more problems than he thinks he has. It would be a clear admission of political incompetence.
