There is a case of some antiquity that supports this view, namely R v Palmer, which says someone defending themselves cannot be expected to weigh the threat and the necessary force to defend themselves ‘to a nicety’.That was my thought. Although the MP behaved like a **** and was totally out of order, the suggestion that someone getting into a fight should wait till the other person is ready is a little odd. I’m not saying it’s applicable in this case because the bloke he hit didn’t appear to look threatening, but if you’re in a situation where you’re pretty sure you’re going to get hit you’d get stuck in as quickly as possible or leg it.
