Growth will come from a totally unexpected area that no one foresaw - or immigrants doing the jobs no one in the west wants to do. I mean, for a young person do you a) want to look after old people or b) earn a dime off YouTube/Tik Tok/Only fans etc.
My guess is that the next few years will see modest growth, but events will dictate what happens. No one really saw Brexit, a pandemic or a war in Ukraine on the horizon, so my actual answer is: fuck knows.
My only expectation from this Government is reasonably competent stewardship of the economy and country. Something that has been absent since 2016 when we set fire to ourselves and the Tory party combusted trying to simultaneously believe in two incompatible articles of faith. One. That they were the party of Brexit. Two. That they were the party of the economy and business. Result. A wild descent into insanity and increasingly weird leaders.
Today’s immigration announcement was about politics not stewardship and trying to reset the narrative. I doubt it will work anymore than Trump trying to bring back manufacturing to the US or any other batshit nonsense everyone seems keen to try these days. Thankfully, they haven’t imposed hard caps or annual targets just an end of term promise which will likely bite them in the arse.
