The word isn't offensive because I don't find it offensive, nor do many Friends/Family of mine who someone may think they should/would find it offensive.

You're offended by the word ******. ok keep on being offended by a word but ask yourself why are millions of people out there not offended by the word?

word to your mother ;)

I'm not offended by the word, but a lot are, that makes it offensive. I've consulted my mother, she agrees.

I assume you agree that Clarkson is indeed..............(dramatic pause)................a complete dickhead?

I've never met Clarkson so I can't comment. I assume you've met Clarkson and know him?
What I do know of him however is that he is a celebrity and will crave attention.
Doing this has been a smart exercise for people who need celebrities in their life to pay him attention.
Definite stunt but it's pathetic. As I said they did it in Thailand saying there's a slope on the bridge (as a Thai walks across it)

It's clearly an offensive word, and Clarkson is a dickhead for using it. In fact I thought Clarkson was dickhead before he used that word.

There is nothing new to learn here.

You do know, assuming you are a Black man, that your 'cirlce of friends/ family' do not count towards finding offence with the word as they are in your 'trust group'?

However, if someone/ a stranger casually used the word to your face in describing you and your race, still you would not be offended??

That would be incredibly hard to believe.

I know that as a white man my opinion is worth slightly less than nothing here, and I appreciate I'm going out on a limb, but is there perhaps the remotest possibility that not every black person feels exactly the same way you do?
Personally, I think you are both wrong - the above poster extrapolates his views that the word isn't offensive to him to imply that therefore it isn't offensive, period, and you do the precise opposite. because neither of you seem to grasp that others feel differently to you.
Maybe the truth is in the middle - some black folk find it offensive, whereas others don't.
So in my opinion best we don't use it at all, and then nobody gets offended.

Behind every single every word is a connotation. The word is assigned meaning, so we may understand it. Bread means bread, because we have assigned meaning to it.

The assigned meaning to the word ****** is centuries of subjugation, degration, and physical and emotional discrimination, that became de facto terminology for slaves during the period of chattel slavery in the US during 18th and 19th century. It is unambigiously perjorative, dehumanising .

The word cannot be seperated from its etymology, may be in time it will be, but currently it has not.

A person using that word in Peckham will go down like a cup of warm vomit.

Just because you and your friends do not find it offensive is beside the point.

Your opinion is valid as an other.

However, for anyone not to feel offence has to be someone who knows nothing about the direct connotations of the word involved. Perhaps that person would have lived a sheltered life on an island and has never heard it before!!

One cannot be taught of that history, see the pictures of slavery, know of its impact, have the same colour and not be offended by a stranger using that word.

It's just not possible in my mind.

I like Clarkson. He seems to be a pretty smart man with an extremely dry sense of humour.

Sorry, where was the 'humour' bit again...??

You've explained the universe, explaining Clarkson is beyond even you...

It's almost as though people have different senses of humour isn't it? Truly bizarre it is.

How do people react to the pejorative term "cracker" to describe white people. It offends me as much as the N word because of what it is actually referring to.

The humour bit was when he used the "N" word.

It was, I find mumbled racial description in old nursery rhymes to be humour switch where I can't stop laughing.

On a completely unrelated note, here's celebrated comedian Chris Rock who is totally unfunny due to extreme racial themes

Other races should come up with an offensive "N word" for whites....like calling us "A Neville". Fuck I'd be highly offended by that, it does not get any worse than being "A Neville"

Yes it does. "P Crerand" for one, and "L.Macari" for another.

Cracker refers to "whip cracker" as in the context of slavery. Its a slur of significance.

The Americans use "Ben Affleck" as this term

Really? I refer to myself as a cracker quite often. If I'm talking to an Italian I refer to myself as a Caker.

If its acceptable in their own culture to call one another it, Why can't it be used by other cultures?

Oh for fucks sake.
This question has been asked and debated several times since you've been a member of this forum so why are you asking it again.

Here's a tip for finding a definitve answer, ask the next black adult you see if they're offended by you using the word.

anyone under 65 who uses, or wants to use, the word is an idiot.

You are the descendants of slave owners then, and must pay reparations.
