The NHS

No, and I'm sorry to hear you personally have had such a bad experience. I had a middling one but good enough, the frustration is with waiting times and what seem to be attempts to save money, understandable given the burden the nations health places on the NHS. Your experience is not representative of what to expect from the NHS and if someone comes on here saying they owe their life to the NHS due to life saving emergency intervention then we wouldn't want to take that as solely representative either. To be honest though I prefer the sound of banging drums to grinding axes.
My ailment could have been prevented, saved and recovered from had they acted sooner. It wasn't like they weren't made aware either. They were informed by other practitioners to do something, chose not to, cancelled a scheduled appointment, and as a result the situation regressed. I was entirely in their care and through their neglect I now have a lastign condition that affects my daily life and i'm being urged to hold them to account for it. At the moment I don't know what to do.

I stated right at the beginning the NHS is a wonderful thing but in my experience it's run by people who simply don't give a shit when it's their job to. I don't care about the other comments, he's got some personal axe to grind, but I cannot lie about my recent experiences can I, just because it paints the NHS staff in a well deserved bad light but people don't want to hear that do they. They weren't hard working, over worked and stressed out, they were lazy, feckless and disinterested. I was a routine patient and when my illness got worse they refused to do anything about it and i've got a lasting condition because of it. When given the opportunity to rectify it, they cancelled on me. Fair to say I don't have a very high opinion of NHS staff at present.

Yes, I get it, in your experience. A very poor one but not representative of the whole NHS. I can tell you from my experience, as a "consumer" and as staff that its run by people who do give a shit. It is undermined by politicians who don't give a shit though.

I gave an account of my experiences that has soured my view of the organisation, nothing more than that.

People can take it as read or dismiss it, that's fine. But i'm still not going to be silent about voicing criticisms.

English a second language is it? All i posted was ‘it’s impossible to have a grown up conversation about the NHS’ which is what happen. I posted nothing about the NHS, it’s staff or the way it’s run.

So what ‘prejudices’ have I shown?

We all know.why people value the NHS and people know it has been mismanaged for a few decades by governments(though they love to blame the local trusts they sign off on).

The thread seems more like it could have been in the other thread and this will be one that will start multiple arguements along the line.

So all I wil l say is be gratefull we have it because not having it would be worse.

And with that I will leave this thread before it goes tits up, so I wont be answering replies to this.

I have a range of complicated, chronic health issues so I deal with the NHS regularly. Just for some context, I've spent three weeks of the year in hospital so far, and I'm regularly booked in for consultancy appointments so I spend a lot of time in waiting rooms as well as wards. I've also dabbled with private healthcare on occasion. Frankly, I think we're incredibly fortunate to have something like the NHS in this country. Speak to any American who's used it, or to anybody who lives in a country with a completely private healthcare system for that matter, and they'll be huge advocates. I think that speaks volumes. Given how much the rest of the world hates us and the way we do things, I think we have to protect and cherish something that other countries view as a wonderful thing.

It has big problems, though. Most of its current ones are caused by deliberate tactics employed by the Tories to starve it of funds and sell off various parts of it to companies like Virgin. This is literally happening. The other day I waited ninety minutes for a quick review with one of my consultants because there's no longer enough staff to meet patient demand. What those evil bastards are doing to one of this country's proudest accomplishments is nothing short of shameful, but I'd expect nothing less. Having said that, there are serious problems that the Tories have nothing to do with - the administrative problems it has could easily be solved in ways they don't seem keen to trial, and consultants and GPs are far too powerful and are paid far too much money for their time compared to other NHS staff.

I think the love for the NHS comes from the effort put in on the ground, though. I'm talking less about consultants and GPs and more about the paramedics, the ward nurses, the secretaries - the people who make the NHS tick and contribute considerably to its community spirit without receiving much in the way of thanks, or a wage that reflects their efforts. The NHS is a flawed organisation that's currently incapable of dealing with how much is demanded of it, and there are reasons both political and otherwise for why it's currently in the state it's in, but anyone who's had to use it regularly (either for themselves or for family) will tell you that they'd take a dodgy free service in a heartbeat over having to fork out thousands every other month.

I have nothing but positive comments to make about the NHS.

However, like most of our public services it is inadequately funded and could probably be better organised.

The OP needs to look to his beloved Tory Party for the culprits. They have been manoeuvring to privatise the NHS for years.

As to those who say we can't afford to properly fund it, whilst at the same time trumpeting our position as the world's 5th largest economy, give your heads a wobble.

The current shift to the right means that the NHS is in grave danger and if it were to be dismantled it would be a very sad day for this country.
