The Nigel De Jong Appreciation thread

Best of luck to Nige.

He always gave 100% and has been instrumental in our journey so far. He's definetley one of the players I will keep following after his City career, but I do have to question that fee... Are they fucking sure?

This is definetley one of the worst bits of business I've seen City make and mark my words, we could regret not offering him a new contract.

Hopefully Marwoods got somebody suitable to walk through the door, otherwise I think Rodwell is a bit of a downgrade.

I dont question many decisions but letting De Jong go for as little as €3.5 million is fucking shocking business by the club. I am hearing De Jong is gett €120 grand a week not huge money. Why the fuck didnt they just give him the money and a new contract instead of spending 20 odd million on Javi Garcia and end up giving him the £120 grand a week deal. I am truely dumb founded by the club and Mancini by this move. 27 just going into his peak I just hope we have put on a load of add ons in this deal as were getting robbed.
Look at the midfield Barry after that injury he is on borrowed time at the club for me lucky to get a season out of him as the only defensive midfielder scares the fuck out of me if we dont sign a replacement. Rodwell is too young to do that job on his own just yet we need to make a signing to replace De Jong big time or we will struggle against the bigger teams when we need someone to crunch a player. I am just dumb founded by this move and Mancini has made a big fuck up by letting him go in my opinion.

Consider this... He wasn't happy only starting ELEVEN times last season. That might be part of the reason.

3.5m, if true, is a fucking disgrace. What the fuck is going on? I'm sickened by that figure. Some player. One of the best at what he does. Will be missed.
When will he be missed?
Every time we come up against players with pace in midfield like Ramires for Chelsea who Barry generally struggles against. Nigel always seems to cope better against faster players, even though he's not that quick himself.
Every time we come up against a team where we need to win a physical battle in midfield.
When we need to keep the ball in a tight game.
Certainly within the squad.
Plus now we can't sing his songs anymore.
You are obviously thinking he won't be replaced. If he is then the above can be totally discounted.

-- Fri Aug 31, 2012 1:01 pm --

For football reasons as Mancini doesn't rate him as highly.

He was needed last season was he.

Always enjoyed Nige's cameos on the 'Inside City' videos. Seemed like a really likeable character and he'll be greatly missed.

On the pitch, the enforcer, enough said. Good luck Nige.

Absolutely gutted to see NDJ go. Top player who has been instrumental in our success. Never gave less than 100% for us and one of my all time favourites. Seemed like he was a top man in the dressing room, and always had a good connection with the fans. Good luck Nige, always welcome at the Etihad.

I'm sad to see him go...
A great player who gave it his all on the pitch, I wish him all the best in the future.

He will be missed...

finally all city fans agree on something, de jong will be greatly missed... His attitude to the club and the game rarely found...

Its a tear in the eye to see him go, top bloke with all the time in the world for the city fans...

De yong - de yong, de yong - de yong - de yong !

Sad day today seeing de jong leave for Milan and think its a joke. We signed him for 18 million when he had 6 months to go on his contract with Hamburg and sold him for 3 million??

I think de jong always gives everything he has got and breaks up play so well and will be sadly missed

Steven fletcher goes for 15 million and we get 3 for nige :-(

O when de jong

Absolute disgrace to let him go. He was class against Chelsea, dropped against Southampton where we played poorly and brought back in to play at Anfield.

Madness to let someone like him go. Top pro and seemed a really good guy to have around the place.

Good luck Nige

just what is Mancini thinking? ridiculous selling De Jong. we will miss him sorely, mark my words. Rodwell wont fill his shoes for atleast 5 more years, and Barry is out for a while still and it could be a while until he comes back to top form.

I really, really wish we sign someone for our midfield, otherwise I can't see us retaining the title, unless Utd and Chelsea crumble completely

Overall I think we lost more than we gained this summer.

Rodwell is a different kind of player. Personally, I think Rodders will do a fine job. You ask what Mancini is thinking and yet know one really knows what De Jong is thinking.

I'm pretty gutted about this and 3m (if true) is just taking the piss. For 3m I would have just kept him here and let him run his contract down.

You make two valid points. Firstly, I understand Rodwell isn't a typical dejongesque player, but he IS our only midfield signing so far, and will have to play alongside Yaya (who is, as you would probably agree, terrible at defending or even tracking back sometimes). So in my eyes this leaves a massive gaping hole for teams to exploit in the midfield. Atleast until Barry is 100% fit and ready, but I dont think that will happen too soon.

Secondly, we really dont know what De Jong is thinking, but my question is whether it makes sense (both financially and in terms of team gelling and so on) to sign a NEW midfielder for 25 odd million pounds and pay him what De Jong was asking for in his contract extension? It doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

Only way I can agree with Mancini and whoever else was involved in this is if De Jong was 100% convinced he wants to go and was unhappy at City.
