The Official Ashes 09 Thread

Aussies can never get into an arguement about sporting behaviour after rolling that ball against New Zealand to stop them getting a boundary.

or playing with a drug cheat all those years.

i wonder how many years warne was taking those banned substances before he got caught.

then they have the cheek to accuse mullitharin ( not sure spelled correct ) of being a 'chucker'.

even their warden, oops ! , ha ha.

sorry prime minister joined in on that one.

Well done England.....Or rather well done Collingwood and the lower order! I must admit that at 20-2, 31-3, 46-4, 70-5, 127-6, and 159-7 I never expected us to tough out a draw. And it's about time we came out with something after being outplayed for most of the match. Too many times over recent years we've been on the receiving end of teams hanging on for a draw against us. The Old Trafford Ashes test of 2005 when we just failed to take the final Australian wicket, despite being the better team for much of the match, springs to mind. Plus the one in the West Indies a few months back as well.

The warning signs were there in that we were outplayed for the most part, but this is an opportunity for the mainstream batsmen to get their act together. Collingwood, Anderson, and even Panesar showed that if you concentrate enough and don't do anything stupid then you can spend a decent amount of time at the crease. I've no problem with batsmen getting out to great deliveries but it's the chucking of wickets away that I can't abide. It's difficult to criticise Pietersen when he has a test average of over 50 but his dismissal in the first innings was inexcusable for a man of his calibre.

It helped greatly that the Aussies don't have the likes of McGrath and Warne to call on anymore but you've still got to give huge credit to Jimmy and Monty for hanging in there at the end, and doing it quite comfortably too. It was one of those strange occasions where it almost felt like a victory!

Roll on Lords - it's high time we did something about our shocking Ashes record at the home of cricket methinks.

That is the problem though, if a good bat gets in he will sore 50 - 100, if a great bat gets in he will ensure that his side will not lose the test.
How often was Brian Lara outbetween 30 - 100?
Sunni Gavaskar?
Sachin tendulkar?
Even middle order batsmen like Mark Waugh, his brother steve, Sir Viv, Clive Hubert Lloyd... you either got them early or you paid the price. a great bat will NEVER GIVE HIS WICKET AWAY.

If you're an Aussie, that is a surprisingly lucid point. At least compared to our 'cowboy' who was on earlier. And a very valid point re. not giving your wicket away. KP is an undoubted talent, and on his day one of the best in the word. However, his two dismissals in this test were criminal. Too many of our top order didn't produce. They all got starts in the first innings but none of them went on to clock up a big 'un. As for the second innings, to be 70 for 5 against not much more than a fairly good attack (not brilliant), and on that snooker table of a strip, beggars belief. We got away with it today, thanks to Coly and the last pair. If we don't up the performances considerably, we can forget about winning back the little urn.

19 wickets to 6... I wouldn't be cock-a-hoop if I was the English.

Fucking relieved, but not confident.

There were also two sessions lost to rain...

Yes but the Ozzie's also 'accepted' the light on day 3....bet they are regretting that! Cant wait for Lords......COME ON ENGLAND

Next XI:-
Strauss
Cook
Bopara
Pietersen
Collingwood
Prior
Freddie
Swann
Anderson
Harmison
Onions

Gotta play harmy but im unsure whether or not broad should be given another go ahead of onions.
