Worthington was involved in the Taiwo/Woods debacle when he moved from Leeds to Chelsea and lured them with him, meaning Chelsea ended up paying £5million in compensation for kids who are now playing for Carlisle and Yeovil. And Chelsea got a transfer ban for it. I imagine his CV has more impressive things than that on it though. ;)

That's the problem with paying for kids, they can be seeming world beaters but it's still odds against them doing anything worthwhile*..though to be fair it's not just about the kids, also about how well the club develops them and turns them from prospects into actual players.

That latter bit is definitely something we need to work on, but it can be a very profitable game if you get it right - particularly if like us you're a 'top' club and can sprinkle otherwise average players with a bit of top 4 stardust then flog them on for £4-6 million (while also hoping to develop some really top players, of course).

*And I suppose it's also fair to say that transfers for established pros are hardly foolproof are they..as we know only too well!

We are now producing or poaching (on the cheap) young players with excellent technical ability who, even if they don't make it here, should be sold at good prices... assuming our transfer team are capable of this, as Weiss' sale to Pescara at only £1.3million is still bugging me days later when he is clearly worth more and players in League One are sold for more than that (ie. Matthew Lowton to Villa for £3.3million).

If we sell Guidetti it should be for no less than £8million (+ addons or sell-on fee) as if he played for almost any other club he would go for that much, if not more.

Yes, good post - more grist to the mill for the Marwood bashers. I agree that that price for Weiss is pathetic and (I suspect like you) have been rather unnerved at the low ball figures being thrown around for Guidetti. Should be £10m+ IMO - it's not like he's on an expensive contract that will depress the price..

Manchester City appoint new head scout
MEN | August 06, 2012

Manchester City have reshuffled their scouting department, with former Manchester United youth team player Gary Worthington becoming the new head of player recruitment.

The highly-regarded Worthington, nephew of former Bolton and England star Frank, replaces Mike Rigg, who left to join up with Mark Hughes at Queen’s Park Rangers.

So does anyone know anything about this guy...?

I don't think there is much to know about him because he has no real coaching history and previously stated he was involved in the Taiwo/Wood transfers from Leeds to Chelsea - so a black mark against his name. He has been at City for a while - don't know what his role was before - but I think he's well in with Marwood as they are always together at EDS games. But as there is no real quality history that is known is surely not good as MCFC should be taking on people that have shown some real credentials at previous clubs. I know Ged goes over the top but there is clearly a malaise at the club that those at the very top are unaware of and are being allowed to pull the wool over their eyes.

Have you guys seen the info about the new EDS league that's due to be started this season? This is what we changed our reserves to the EDS over - the proposals to institute a national under-21s structure to better develop youths coming through.

The leagues are broken down by the level of academy category - so we will only contest the Under-21 Premier League with the other category one academies. The actual structure of the league is complicated though. Rather than try to explain it myself, I'm just going to use the Daily Fail's graphic illustrations.

Should make for an interesting set-up. We are in "Nat Group 3" at the start, for the record, with Chelsea being our main opposition.

This is all well and good but what about games in the new year & spring - there is still a shortage of fixtures then - I really think this has not been fully thought through.

-- Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:46 pm --

Yes as far as I know - we have drawn Blackpool in the cup again as well - hopefully we don't stuff it up again after we were coasting in the 1st half of that game & were one nil up at the break.

Hows Mathias Bossaerts been doing, hasn't he played a few EDS friendlies?

For someone who just turned 16 a couple of weeks ago & moved to a new country with a different culture I have been quite impressed - but its early days

Wont the elite group stage and the two other groups provide fixtures for the new year?

I remember last season someone on this forum doing a brilliant run down of who in our academy to look out for and how they played etc, who do I have to blackmail/bribe to see a version for this season :)

It was a great way to get me psyched up for our youngsters, if I recall a lot of praise floated in the direction of Harry Bunn.

Which should tell you to not believe a word of any of it. I think it was Pughie who even though you can applaud his enthusiasm just seems to say "he's tall and gets forward, the new steven gerrard", "he's small and black and plays on the wing, the new swp" without actually seeing any of them play.

This new league looks really good though especially if you make it to the elite round. The elite round could be, Arsenal, Everton, West Ham, Villa, United, Southampton, Chelsea, City. Strong group that.

I can only go off what I have seen/heard, I'll put a disclaimer on the next one to say that although they play like that against boys their own age they perhaps wont perform that well in an open age group

I didn't mean to sound horrible or anything mate, i love yours and LoveCity's enthusiasm for the youngsters, just i have learnt to calm and rationalise my opinions on young players from years gone by. All good young players like Suarez, Rekik, Hiwula ect all have talent and promise but it means nothing until they show it in competitive match's at a good level either with us or on loan. Seen too many players who i thought would make it at 17, 18 who end up playing non-league by 23.

We can all get excited by a young talent but no one knows what will happen. Some peak at 17, 18, and some who you think is a good or ok player develop better and become the better player as they get older.

Yes, the graph is confusing but it says it on there. From Aug to Dec we will be in group C with Chelsea, Liverpool, Palace, Middlesbrough, Wolves and Fulham which will give us 12 games.

Then from Jan to May we will play in a group of 8 depending on where we finish in the league. If we finish in the top two we will play in the Elite Group, 3rd to 5th Qual Group 1, 6th-7th Qual Group 2. Providing another 14 games. My prediction based on how good an academy is and how they have performed last few years would be City, Chelsea, United, Villa, Southampton, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham.

Then the top 3 go to a play off semi and then a final.

So in total we would play 26 league games minimum, with 6 minimum european games bringing a total of 32 minimum games with the added bonus of 2 more in the league and 4 in europe through progress.

Then take into account the Manchester Senior Cup against United, Bolton, Stockport, Bury, Oldham ect plus the Central Lancashire cup and we are looking at a minimum 40 game season with 34 of them against top class opposition.

Fantastic news and makes last year look even more stupid than it was. Plenty of games for our youngsters to develop, no more stalling hopefully.
