The Official EDS and Academy Thread 2013/14

surprised how Denayer came out of the blue considering how good he looks, he wasnt even in an academy when we signed him (and he was initially on trial wasn't he?) I don't think as he says in that city tv video that he left Anderlecht to go in some academy and we got him from there

I have mentioned this plenty of times on this thread and last season's one but i will reiterate it again.

One of our many habits in this country and one of the many reasons why our player development is poor is because if a 18 year old isn't a first teamer or a £30m future world class player then they are deemed "not good enough".

Look at Andros Townsend last night, he is 22 and has had 9 loan clubs before he was a first team player and now looks like he will go on to have a good career with Spurs and England. He was written off by Spurs fans, even forgotten about because he wasn't playing at 18 or touted as the next big thing.

A lot of people keep saying Lopes needs to get some first team action and point to Januzaj as a comparison but but the two situations are completely different. The main one is that Januzaj does not have Silva, Nasri, Navas and Jovetic to by pass, he has Valencia and Young, if Lopes was at United then he would get a lot more opportunities.

Our EDS has many talented players we have brought in some good ones such as Lopes, Pozo, Angelino, Denayer and we have some good local players such as Facey, Hiwula, Glendon, Evans and Leigh but just because they aren't near the first team does not mean they are not going to make it.

Take Greg Leigh for example, just turned 19, there are players his age who are playing week in week out in the Premier League but that doesn't mean he will never make it because of that. Leigh might not be ready till he is 22 like Townsend and he might never be the next Ashley Cole but why do we always have to look for those types of players? Why can't we look for squad players? Kolarov is our second choice left back, a squad player but one that cost £17m, why can't Leigh be our squad player for £0? Someone who is local, has some pride in playing for the club and won't take anything for granted?

Same goes for Lopes, everyone has high hopes for him to be the kingpin of our team, our future world star who the team is built around and anything less will be a failure but why can't he also be a squad player?

Playing in the U21 league and youth league will just showcase their potential, it will do nothing to suggest they are either going to make it with us or not unless it is really obvious. Someone who shines week in week out may struggle when out on loan when it is serious football whilst others who don't look as good as others in the U21 league will shine out on loan when they are pushed. There are those who will shine straight away and those who will be average or struggle for 2-3 loan spells before one clicks.

Age means nothing, it's all about if they are capable of playing or not both mentally and physically and it doesn't matter if you are 17 or 22.

From what I have seen he is nothing special but will make a good living somewhere. The last time I watched him was last year against England U21s and Jordan Henderson looked twice the player. Ibrahim's name is in the English press more than any unproven City youngster I've ever seen and his agent is making him out to be some Paul Pogba level prospect, which I seriously doubt he is unless he's made miraculous improvements in the past year or so.

Oh so true! Not every player is ready at 18, not every player in a team has to be the best in the world, if anything that can cause more problems (i.e. lack of effort, hissy fits when not starting, huge wages, huge egos). What is it with us English where every player has to be the best, what in our DNA doesn't let something have potential and nuture it, we have the all or nothing approach? Why the fuck do we build up everyone to stupid proportions and then spit vile insults when they fail to meet our insane expectations? You would think we get off on it the amount we do it for both our academy and the national team. Hearing every England player is shit, then hearing moaning when we beat a team as they are also 'shit' then hearing complaints when we loose to some of the best in the world because we are shit but somehow being shit we should still beat everyone in the world? It's just weird.

City to sign Rodney Kongolo?

Wabara must have had a huge upturn in form....?
-------------------------------------------------------
Manchester City will give Reece Wabara a new long-term contract – and a chance in the Premier League.

England under-20s right-back Wabara, 21, has impressed City while on loan at Doncaster in the Championship and convinced them he can graduate into their first team.

City are committed to giving their own home grown youngsters a chance and now see Wabara as having major potential for the future and will reward him with a first team contract.

They are set to recall him in January and then put him in the Premier League squad.

Wabara’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season but City are following the current trend of loaning out youngsters, seeing they can push on and then giving them a first team chance.

It has worked well for Tottenham with Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend and now Wabara may be ready to do the same at City, especially as Micah Richards has yet to sign a new deal.

To be honest, he hasn't looked a Premier League player at this stage of his career but if it's true, fair play to the club for giving him a chance. But he'll be behind Zaba and Richards.

really can't see that happening but after all he is only 21. People on the continent do say that players get written off too early in England
