The Open

Shame Rory couldn't get over the line, a combination of poor second shots and average putting let him down. However, take nothing away from Smith who was sublime today, especially his putting.

You can't argue with a guy who scores 64 on the last day of a major to win from four shots back. Five consecutive birdies was incredible. McIlroy played really well over the week but only two birdies on a course where people were knocking many of their first shots onto the green of the par fours wasn't good enough.

Watching the highlights back again and tee to green I actually think McIlroy was slightly better than Smith even today, who had quite a few bits of fortune.

Once there though, his putting and his touch was just ridiculously good. Can see him easily picking up a few more majors.

Rory played really solid golf yesterday that would have won him 99% of majors from 4 shots up. He hit every green in regulation and gave himself a chance of birdie at every hole, and putted well from there, he just needed a few of the half a dozen or so that went an inch by to drop in.

The only criticism I have is that he didn't react quickly enough to Cam Smith's charge. By the time Smith was through the 12th, he was 5 under for the day, on 4 birdies in a row, and Rory still had 3 or 4 holes that were playing as big birdie/eagle opportunities if he'd gone for them (like Smith and a dozen other players who shot low scores) and he remained conservative until it was too late.

This year has been a pretty good one for McIlroy all things considered. Yes its now 8 years since his last win, but finishing in the top 5 in three and 8th in the other is a massive return to form and if he keeps up this level it's only a matter of time before he wins multiple more.

Not if he goes off to LIV.I think both tours are going to ban all the LIV golfers.

Rory didn't play badly by any means, his driving yesterday was excellent, but his putting was not at the level of Smith who is probably one of the best putters in the in the game. I agree
McIlroy has had an excellent season and cemented himself in the top 5 in the world and hopefully another major is not too far away.
