The price of fish.

Because Alf, hake is frowned upon by many snobby commoner(yet naive) fish eating Brits mate. It is a delicious fish my mum would cook up when we were kids. A very underrated fish in the 70s, albeit an uncommon dinner table fish nowadays because if cost and sparse supply through overfishing. It has since become well out of the budget of the majority of fish lovers.

Why? Because us soft arse Brits governed by the EU have little say in foreign vessels pillaging our waters in a free for all. Factory ships with smaller meshed nets indiscriminately scoop up whatever they can damaging marine ecology and devastating fish stocks. When I say they scoop up everything young fish that will never mature to breed are used in products like processed fisherman's pie, fish paste etc. The rest of the entrails get sent to petfood processing factories, meaning your fish flavour cat food may be affordable, but the fish you feed your family(or like to feed your family) is often out of budget.

Oh and another thing, some of our best seafood is often shipped abroad on ice, hake is a very popular fish on the continent, especially in Spain. But most of it is fuckin' taken from UK waters!

Criminal...

I'm hoping our future government will get tough on illegal fish theft that is currently decimating our waters.
Applaud the sentiment, but most Spanish operators in our waters have bought a licence off a British boat. Doesn't stop them cheating on size, tho'.

There’s a cracking fish stall in Ashton Market, Sea King, two lads run it, Warren who is a rag and Paul a Blue. Fresh produce from Fleetwood, nothings too much trouble for them, top class at very reasonable prices. I love the silver hake, Coated in flour, egg wash and Panko bits, lightly fried, lovely.

Father in law who is retired, now fishes the majority of the year - my freezer has a drawer of vacuum sealed fresh lake fish of several varieties

Every now & then, I like to buy Sashimi grade wild caught salmon or tuna but handful of occasions per year

Where do you get your wild salmon from mate?

Salmon is typically coming from Norway but where I buy it? There are a few supermarkets that sell it here (Manor Foods, Globus Market)

I still long for Yellowtail tuna but it's endangered and have largely given it up

Nice. I have found a little smokehouse in Dumfries and Galloway called Marr where the guy still has a licence to fish for salmon in the traditional way and smoke his catch. Bloody lovely.
D&G is a lovely coastline. I was fortunate in working quite extensively up there a couple of years ago, lovely scenery, amongst the very best in the UK IMO.

I don't really like fresh salmon, especially the farmed stuff but I the best I've ever had was from one of the smokehouses in Arbroath. Hot wild peppered smoked salmon, wow!

I once saw a Rick stein programme some 15 years ago eating Arbroath smokies (small haddock) from one of the smoke houses there. Never heard of a smokie before then so when the opportunity arose I made sure we digged out in Arbroath. They don't look particularly appealing and have a strong smokey smell but the flavour is absolutely delicious. Wrapped in newspaper and when you peel the paper off the skin sticks to the paper to leave the fish to eat.

Same place - dunno whether it's farm, free range (can yer have free range salmon?) or wild salmon from the raging seas of Alaska -if those buggers in Idaho, Massachusetts, and all places American have not gluttonised themselves on the pink caviar!
Ask him next time. If it’s wild Alaskan it’s on the money. If it’s uk farmed see my previous rant :-). Seriously bad stuff
