The Pro Road Cycling Thread

I appreciate this won’t be to everyone’s taste but I’d recommend this podcast series for anyone interested in sports integrity esp around issues of doping. Tucker is a real authority on this, and my main reason for listening, but he also covers so much else, such as the Caster Semenya case, and the ongoing trans debates in sport, both of which get a mention here in the opening segment.

Mostly this one is about the recent TdF time trial, though the fact it was only recorded the day after, when the full 7 minute gap outcome from that stage had become apparent, robs the discussion of added context it probably needs.

For anyone tl;dl he frustratingly but understandably concludes that at this point we don’t really know of what any “alternative explanations” might be, though does rattle off a few possibilities in the last 3 or 4 mins.

The teams have been announced for the Tour of Britain, some big names on the list.

Nice one cheers, planning to go to the Greater Manchester stage.
Btw, you heard any news on the GB team for the world champs?
(It starts next week!)

No sorry, I'll have a look though. Hopefully Eurosport (or whatever they are now called) will televise it.

Yep, maybe. It’s deffo on live on itv as well though, most likely itv4 (Tour of GB I mean).

World Champs mens elite road is on BBC and Eurosport on Sunday

Interesting read from the pov of the strongest team in the race, to whet the appetite for the 7 hour epic on Sunday. Over 270km and 3 and a half thousand metres of climbing I think.

Anyway, back to the cycling. I’m looking forward to a few days up in Glasgow for the Worlds next month, though if this weather keeps up I won’t be taking the bike. Memories of the last one I went to in Harrogate were horrendous, a complete wash out (though I do think I saw us beat Everton in the pub the night before).
These cycling events are so much better a) when you’ve got your own bike and can make a day of it doing some pedalling of your own - sometimes on the actual course, which is shut to cars, and b) when it’s dry.
Got some great memories with my lad of climbing up Buttertubs through the thousands of fans already lining the climb, cos we’d arrived a bit late, when the Tour came to Yorkshire.

The second rider just fucking disappears under that “puddle”.
Remember Gilbert crying in the road race he was that wet and cold. And he’s one tough bastard. And Pederson never got to wear the jersey following season due to Covid.

It wasn’t much fun watching for 4 hours on the roadside either ;-)
