The Queen in Manchester today

I have some sympathy for people that don't agree with having a monarchy in principle, but I honestly think if anyone takes the time to find out a bit about what the Queen does on a day to day basis, and has done consistently for a long time you would not resent her so much.
The royals live in a big media/pr prison - admittedly a pretty plush one, but one thing they really don't have is the freedom to live normally, which includes the freedom to be skint, but also the freedom to pop out down the local / shops and be left alone.

I'm a republican but I don't resent the way she does her job, I resent the way she got it.

Can't argue with that. At least you have the brains to distinguish between the personality and the institution.

Completely agree with that. Mind you, if we were to ever become a republic it would require a huge shake-up of the entire political system of this country if it were to become worthwhile. Case in point, I doubt many of you could name the President of Germany without googling it. He's a figurehead with no real power who is appointed by the Prime Minister. In fact, Christian Wulff stepped down a few weeks ago due to his implication in a scandal. If we did away with the monarchy in favour of the German model of presidency, it wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference. Really, the only way republicanism would make any kind of difference would be if we followed the American or French model.

Can some show me how this 55p is calculated?
It's actually just over 61p per person. Based on 2009/10 figures of £38.2m (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/haveyoursay/2011/03/are_the_royals_value_for_money.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/haveyoursay/ ... money.html</a>) so may be a little bit out. Population currently 62.3m (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Population" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/inde ... Population</a>) gives you 61.3p from every man, woman and child.

But kids don't pay tax.

So its doesn't include security?? Which is probably the biggest cost. If you see the amount of police surrounding her that must mean tens of thousand whenever she goes for a walk about.

And its per person not per tax payer.

I know. I wasn't coming out in favour of it, I was just saying how they calculate it. For the record, I agree.
