I like the queen even if her husband is a total arsehole, albeit a funny one due to him re-enforcing stereotypes about typical snoibby royalty.

Even the young ones do that. I remember when either William or Harry were toddlers and one of them pointed at the surrounding press pack and uttered the line "mummy look at the peasants"
The sycophantic twats taking the pictures all laughed at the little scamp. I thought what snotty out of touch cunts his parents must be.

Based on 2009/10 figures of £38.2m (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/haveyoursay/2011/03/are_the_royals_value_for_money.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/haveyoursay/ ... money.html</a>) so may be a little bit out. Population currently 62.3m (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/index.html?nscl=Population" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/taxonomy/inde ... So its doesn't include security?? Which is probably the biggest cost. If you see the amount of police surrounding her that must mean tens of thousand whenever she goes for a walk about.
And its per person not per tax payer.

I'm in favour of a republic but we'd need pretty wholesale reform of our political system if we were to see any benefit to changing it at all. There is another way though; the PM is de facto head of state for international relations and summits etc, why not just make it official? If we had a president and a PM, one would in all likelihood be doing nothing. One thing you could say for the monarchy is it takes out a lot out of the PM's schedule, pissing around unveiling plaques etc and leaves them more time for the issues that matter.scall said:johnmc said:So its doesn't include security?? A lot of the police on duty today would be on ordinary duty, and probably about another half would be on overtime. To be fair though, I do some work at Hough End where the dogs and horses are, and for the first time I've ever known (even in the summer riots) ALL the horse lorries were out on duty today, it was only after The Queen left that all started to come back...and I'm guessing some of that would have been on overtime.
Her bodyguards I presume are paid for or at least subsidised (Guessing they come from the Diplomatic Protection Force) by the Royal Household, and the soliders on guard at the palaces we pay for anyway.
The Royal Household is however run on a very, very tight budget.
If we scrapped the Royal Family and moved to a republic, then what would they be replaced by? We wouldn't be able to just have a Prime Minister, we'd need some sort of President or other head of state. They'd need a residence, they'd need security etc which would cost quite a lot of money...
Shittest argument for keeping the royal family I have ever heard. It's not like the current PM has no security or pays for his own house is it? If we had a president there would be no need of a PM, so therefore he could live in 10 Downing st at no extra cost.scall said:johnmc said:So its doesn't include security??
