The Queen's been given a pay rise

I love money, says Queen

"It's lucky I'm rich 'cause I'm addicted to hats"

THE best thing about being monarch is the huge amount of money you get, the Queen has confirmed.
With her income set to increase by five percent next year, the Queen said she planned to continue having an absolutely brilliant time.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “When the Crown Estates accountants presented the latest figures she just put her head back and started laughing quietly to herself.

“Then she smiled and shook her head and said, ’38 million quid a year – it just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?’.”

The spokesman added: “Then she got a list out of her handbag and started going through it.

“First thing she asked was, ‘can I get loads more horses?’ and then ‘what about two really big helicopters – a blue one and a red one?’ Then she announced that she was going to order the longest table in the world.

“When the accountants said that was all fine she just nodded and said ‘nice – nice, nice, nice, nice‘.”

It is understood the Queen later telephoned the King Juan Carlos of Spain, said ’38 million’ and then hung up on him.

Sounds like something out of the Viz lol

It's actually the daily mash - they have new 'news' articles each weekday and most are pretty amusing. I got the app for 59p.

Don't laugh at this one too loud tho else Her Royal Highness and her legion of grateful serfs may take umbrage.

I'm of the view that even a constitutional monarchy cannot exist in a true democracy. Their personal appeal or otherwise is entirely irrelevant to this principal. Similarly whether they do or do not pay for themselves by dint of tourist spend is of nil consequence (and frankly I'm unconvinced by the facts of that point - last time I was in Rome the coliseum was pretty busy but it is some time since Caesar spent his afternoons there).

In my opinion it boils down to this: do you want to live in a society that considers authority to be a birthright? I do not.

I admire the Queen, she has represented this country with dignity and at 87 is still attending official functions and has always taken her duties as Queen her priority.

Do the posters who treat her such disdain feel the same way about H.R.H Sheik Mansour and his family. At it's most basic level he is a man who due to being born into a royal family has made him a very rich, privileged man. Is he spoken of with such disrespect, is he a sponger, parasite?

I wouldn't attack the queen personally. She got dealt a hand and ran with it. Very few people wouldn't. I also wouldn't call Mansour a parasite. As with the queen, he was born into privilege and didn't turn his nose up at it.

If you wanted a serious debate about the politics and laws of the Arab world though, I wouldn't hold him up as some untouchable that can't be criticised, just because he owns the football club I support.

The UAE along with most countries in that part of the world have some serious question marks over them in regard to human rights. Particularly with their treatment of foreign nationals working in the country. And I'm not sure you'd want to be a woman over there, with your opinion worth half that of a man in law and the beating of your wife as an entitlement by law.

These types of threads on the Royal Family always make me laugh. Especially on this message board for Manchester City Football Club who are owned by a member of another countries Royal Family.

Hypocrites.

Is everyone who ever criticized Peter Swales a hypercrite for still supporting the football club?

People criticized Peter Swales for holding the club back. Would you want the Sheik to pull his backing out now? We would all support the club the same but would you want to go back to being a mid table, carling cup semi final hopefuls club?

You cannot be happy with one "free loading parasite who has never done a days work in their life" funding your hobby and at the same time want another "free loading parasite who has never done a days work in their life" to be stripped of all their privileges. Well you can if you are a hypocrite.

. It wasn't necessarily about Sheik Mansour more about the way two royal people are treated so differently. I cannot see what the difference is that makes one parasitic etc but the other not.

I know nothing about life in Abu Dhabi are the things you mentioned law there?

Who pays the security costs for the Queen and her very extended family.
Crown Estates or the taxpayer ?
Bet that run's in to a few bob.

Worth every penny, she brings in a 100 times more than she takes and she works hard. The rest of em can fook right off, apart from Harry, my daughter loves him so he's ok by me.

100 x more than she takes? Not sure about that one.

Ok maybe 100 x is more for effect than has substance but to be fair if you add all the revenue up regarding the Royal Buildings, and the amount of people who come over here to London to see the Tower, Buckingham Palace, Crown Jewels, purchasing merchandise etc. etc. I bet she is more than value for money..
You do realise that getting rid of the monarchy doesn't mean we have to demolish everything associated with them? There are no Pharaohs left, but the Pyramids are still there.

I've been to Cambodia and Thailand in the last few years. I visited royal palaces in both countries, but at no point was the presence of a royal family a factor in my decision to go. In both cases, however, there were certain areas that we weren't allowed to access precisely because of the royal presence. Far from adding value to the experience, they actually made it worse.

I don't consider this hypocritical in the slightest. My objection to the royal family is based on the principal of democracy and my own preference for this concept to be applied in practice in full.

I am also a fan of self determination. Consequently I consider it none of my business whatsoever if the folk of Abu Dhabi are content with a benevolent dictatorship, would prefer democracy, have a penchant for anarchy or long for communism.

That a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family has chosen to invest some money in City is unrelated to the above and entirely welcomed by me - not least as he has done so without placing a burden of obligation on me (unlike the obligations we all face from the British monarchy).

If and when he elects to withdraw his support, I'll carry on watching City. Just as I did before he came along.

Drawing a binary correlation between following City and being a monarchist due to the current ownership is specious at best, or more frankly simply bollocks

I wouldn't swap places with her so the fact that's she born into wealth means fuck all to me. She's welcome to her banal duties and constant media watch. The royals cost very little in relative terms and our quaint image abroad with our formalities and endearingly antiquated traditions undoubtedly contributes to our tourism. Considering our shockingly shit weather, we're a magnet for tourists and the history of Britain will be a huge part of it. Overall they're highly likely to be a significant net contributor to the economy. Those who talk about the Royal Estates are fucking absurd though. If the royals didn't exist, the estate would still exist, and it'd still be generating income.

Fabulous idea. In fact we could simply mummify the lot of them and charge the tourists to file past some golden caskets and a stuffed corgi or two...

For the sake of arguments let's say Liz and Phil the Greek haven't done a bad job for us.
But Charles and Queen Camila. FFS

I haven't called anybody a parasite. I've stated that I hold no animosity to the queen personally. I have a problem with the system that puts her in that position.

Not really sure where the hypocrisy comes from. I supported City when Swales was in charge, even though he was a ****. I supported City when Lee was in charge, even though I can't stand the bloke. I supported City when Shinawatra was in charge, even though he's about as dodgy as they come. And I support City now Mansour is in charge and will continue to do so if he fucks off.

Whether I like, respect or can't stand the current bloke in charge is totally irrelevant to me supporting City. I support the team not the owner.
