Interesting points, I think the music thing is changing a bit now though as you don’t really get huge guitar based bands coming through and many youngsters who like that music prefer what us old farts like. I’ve got young family who love 90s indie music, 70s rock etc.I think you may be confusing left wing politics with centrist social liberalism? There's plenty of Right Wing online media to counter any Left leaning content.
I don't see anybody blaming a fan base for racism, simply highlighting that a black actor has received dozens of racist messages.
I don't buy the comment that any criticism of canon is met with claims of racism either. Nor have I seen anyone branded a racist/transphobe for thinking a TV series is crap.
The ideals of left wing and right win politics hasn't changed. What has changed is social conservative values being replaced with more progressive/inclusive social liberal views. This is in part down to Christianity's influence on western vales having waned over the last century.
It's not 'PC Gone Mad' or 'Wokeism' it's just change. The older you are, or the more religious you are, the more resistant you are to it.
It's a bit like music, every generation thinks the following generations music is shit.
I think the left vs right confusion these days is precisely because of this thing people call “woke” and it’s where you put it on the political compass. Most of them support capitalism still but want it to be regulated to support group identities.
That cannot be called left wing, certainly not in an economic sense which to me means it isn’t really left wing. It is more centrist than anything but it’s not like 3rd way Blairism either. Some of it is quite bizarre and doesn’t really land on a conventional political compass.
I view progress as things like the equalities act and laws that protect people from racism. I don’t see implementing dozens of genders, saying white people are inherently evil, that we live in a patriarchy and attacking comedians on stage as progress. One look at Twitter and there’s a significant amount of people wanting Ricky Gervais to be kicked off Netflix for quoting what trans activists actually say and getting a laugh from it.
Regarding the media, I think there’s a healthy balance when it comes to this sort of stuff, the Guardian and the Express are two ends of the spectrum and provide laughs.
