The Rise of the Far Right

I think you may be confusing left wing politics with centrist social liberalism? There's plenty of Right Wing online media to counter any Left leaning content.

I don't see anybody blaming a fan base for racism, simply highlighting that a black actor has received dozens of racist messages.

I don't buy the comment that any criticism of canon is met with claims of racism either. Nor have I seen anyone branded a racist/transphobe for thinking a TV series is crap.

The ideals of left wing and right win politics hasn't changed. What has changed is social conservative values being replaced with more progressive/inclusive social liberal views. This is in part down to Christianity's influence on western vales having waned over the last century.

It's not 'PC Gone Mad' or 'Wokeism' it's just change. The older you are, or the more religious you are, the more resistant you are to it.

It's a bit like music, every generation thinks the following generations music is shit.
Interesting points, I think the music thing is changing a bit now though as you don’t really get huge guitar based bands coming through and many youngsters who like that music prefer what us old farts like. I’ve got young family who love 90s indie music, 70s rock etc.

I think the left vs right confusion these days is precisely because of this thing people call “woke” and it’s where you put it on the political compass. Most of them support capitalism still but want it to be regulated to support group identities.

That cannot be called left wing, certainly not in an economic sense which to me means it isn’t really left wing. It is more centrist than anything but it’s not like 3rd way Blairism either. Some of it is quite bizarre and doesn’t really land on a conventional political compass.

I view progress as things like the equalities act and laws that protect people from racism. I don’t see implementing dozens of genders, saying white people are inherently evil, that we live in a patriarchy and attacking comedians on stage as progress. One look at Twitter and there’s a significant amount of people wanting Ricky Gervais to be kicked off Netflix for quoting what trans activists actually say and getting a laugh from it.

Regarding the media, I think there’s a healthy balance when it comes to this sort of stuff, the Guardian and the Express are two ends of the spectrum and provide laughs.

I like The Pogues, John Lee Hooker, The Animals, OMD, Mel C, Talk Talk and Andrea Bocelli

I think Capitalism is a cancer on society, I was called a "woke communist" the other day , which is so funny i pissed my pants. Generally its a lack of understanding of what the left is about and also we have the Americanisation of UK politics where as the Tories are Republicans and the left are the Democrats, which is stupid on another level.

I would be interested to know what you think Left wing economic thinking is?

Correct

Who actually does? I do not know anyone who thinks this way.

Its fucking twitter for fucks sake. BTW Gervais is a fucking obnoxious prick, i just do not find him funny, but I would not want him kicked off anything because I do not find him funny.

If you think the ultra Liberal Guardian is one end of the spectrum, thank fuck we have the good old Morning Star, the doyen of proper left wing media. The Morning Star takes no truck with Liberal obsessions, its pro Working Class and partakes in none of this woke nonsense.

Don’t you dare put the Animals in the same sentence as Mel C again! The rest of your reply I can tolerate but not that my friend!

I think there is definitely an issue with American politics creaping into Britain. The Dems are a right wing party but over there they’re left wing somehow?

Left wing economic beliefs are so obvious I can’t even be arsed explaining them. It’s obviously froM Marx‘S ideas and everything from a soft definition to full on communism from there.

never heard of the morning start but I’m not that interested in politics of today. I gave up in 1975 to be honest, I realised then we’re utterly fucked!

Mel C and the Animals in the same sentence shows it is possible to have widely diverse tastes :)

You can read the Morning Star online, i prefer the paper version but the online site is worth a read.

Economically i am probably more Keynesian than Marxist.

What’s your favourite Mel C track and I’ll have a listen?

I’m sure there is right media. But the fact the left are influential at the moment, this is leading to the rise in the right. Canon has been changed. As a fan of Star Trek try sitting through Discovery or Picard and tell me that diversity hasn’t become front and centre at the expense of a well written story - Star Trek has always been diverse and posed the moral questions. Which is why I love it.

left have moved farther left. When you have the right on the side of feminists (yes, you could be playing devils advocate saying the enemy of my enemy is my friend) because they are vocal in safe spaces for women. The recent news on women only spaces is good news, and hopefully is a good start.

I’m typically leftist like I said. I’m against the death penalty, I’m pro welfare and pro abortion under the rules set in the UK. I’m not for open borders for the simple reason that I feel it’s politically motivated. That’s about as right as I go.

I’m bowing out of this thread now. I’ve stated what I believe and I’ve not accused anyone of being ‘confused’ about their beliefs.

and no one has answered my original question.

I perhaps worded it a little bluntly, certainly didn't to offend you.

I'll state that I think you are assigning social liberal views onto left wing politics. I believe this reasoning stems from the media, due particularly to the Americanisation/tribalism of politics that has seeped into all western culture. Left wing media, certainly in the UK, is nowhere near being as influential as you state.

This is the question you're looking for an answer too?
"what is more patriarchal and misogynistic than a man who now identifies as a woman telling a woman she can’t do anything about ‘her’ going into her private spaces?"

I asked myself this very question, I too thought that it was misogyny. As I have two young daughters I decided to educate myself on the topic. The more I read, and spoke to people more learned than I on the topic; the more I learnt there were a hell of a lot more nuances and that it seemed to be less of an issue for women than social media had me believe.

Views on topics such as transgender, abortion, gun control, immigration, Brexit etc. All are weaponised by the Right and their media. Whether they call it Political Correctness Gone Mad or Wokeism, they are all thrown under a left wing 'liberal' umbrella. It's 'slight of hand', all an attempt to win the votes of people who would benefit economically from the Left, but hold socially conservative values.

Never mind the wealth gap, you plebs focus on fighting each other online over something or other whilst we fill our pockets. And if you're not fighting each other then go stand on a street in your thousands, giving thanks and waving miniature flags at one of the richest families in the world as they look at you from their palace. A day without having to worry about heating or eating is good for morale.

From what you have described in your third paragraph you are left wing, the only reason being against immigration would be considered right wing is if it was due to racism. Many on the left are against FOM and want stricter immigration controls. Not being on board with transgender rights doesn't make you right wing.

This why Labour has struggled, moving to the center under Blair saw it try to be too many things to too many people. Whilst the Tory party throw a bone every now and again to their right of center liberals when it suits.

I wasn’t offended at all mate. It’s more to do with another poster. I think the problem with the misogyny of the question is it can only be that, despite what good intentions are intended for the freedom of rights of trans people, you really can’t avoid it. You will always end up usurping someone else’s rights in doing so.

The issue I mostly have is their can be no conversation on the matter. They don’t want a debate. They just want to educate you and that’s the end of it. I remember being able to have a debate between right and left, and both have good ideas (which makes me centrist) but now it’s impossible. That’s why I personally think they have gone further left, and maybe the right ARE trolling them even more, it’s all very interesting regardless.
