The Rodri dilemma

Yeah like I said. He brings me than just on the pitch.

It's like Kompany and how we supported him during that last season where he was injured - he loves the club even more for it. We could just fuck them off, save the money, I understand that.
you dont pay £250k a week for vibes.

No disrespect but former players like a Fernandinho should be on the staff mentoring the younger players. Apparently something Kolo is doing.

Waiting until one has outplayed their utility isn't what allows us doing the statues, the accolades, and support you're referring to. That is the fabric.

Players are no dummies. They know when they are cooked. Moving on from such situations benefits both the club and the player. Otherwise one becomes like Walker taking loads of heat after being one of the best in the business. To some degree pro sports are heartless but it's also a profession that only a very, very few can ever partake in while being compensated at levels that the average person never will. Just my thoughts...
we say that about every ‘legend’ but the reality is not all want to be coaches and/or return home

Being written of way too early. He was superb v Arsenal in the league cup final, and vs them in the league, he's clearly not been fully fit last 2 games but fair play to him for playing with a WC on the horizon. Losing him and Bernardo would be a killer blow and no chance we'd win the league without him next year.
Agreed.

I think as a club we are comfortable with players just seeing out their contracts. We've seen it time and time again - we are not a selling club. I think we see it as both parties have fulfilled their requirements. It's why sometimes the net spend argument is a bad one because we don't sell players at the peak of their value. If Rodri wants to do a year and leave then as long as his effort remains high then I'll support him.

Problem with trying to keep players and putting them on long contracts to keep their value high is you just end up with a load of players no one wants. United went through this process with Woodward when all their players had one year extensions but never got sold for much money.

It’s not a dilemma…sign the new deal or you’re on the market. Can’t afford to let top players simply run their contract down and walk away for nowt!
The difference in money between getting and not getting CL football would be more than the transfer fee we’d get for him this Summer.

He’s worth keeping just to help us do that even if he left for free next Summer.

This assumes that the difference in the squad between CL or no CL is Rodri! I’m not sure it is, even though I understand your maths!

That would be a valid argument if you think rodri would be the difference between us getting or not getting champions league.

Absolutely need to keep him. Incredible player and perhaps more importantly an incredible leader.
