The Scottish Politics thread

The answer to all of the above would to become a wholly integrated EU state with a hard border at Gretna. I'm not sure of the exact figures, but I think the Scottish economy would currently be running to high a deficit and missing other criteria for EU/euro entry? The SNP need to maintain support, have another referendum and do both at the same time as oil prices recover to make a go of it.

They’ll likely spend several years outside of the UK and EU, this will absolutely fuck them.

Trainspotting will look like utopia at the end of that period and the EU wouldn’t want them.

It’s the epitome of political delusion.

Let’s not pretend the Scots Indy movement isn’t far more toxic, far more ridiculous and far more nationalistic than Brexit.

For me it’s like responding to stubbing your toe by blowing your foot off with a shotgun, for the Scottish people.

The SNP conveniently leave all detail out and the suckers to the left, north of the border, swallow the generalised sound bites she spews.

Who’s currency will Scotland use?

How long will it take to rejoin the EU?

What will the England-Scotland border look like?

If the UK doesn’t agree a FTA with the EU, how will Scottish business, which is deep rooted in England too, such as RBS, cope?

Who’s armed forces will defend Scotland?
RBS is soon to be an English domiciled company.

It seems wrong to deny them independence purely because it is difficult. Our 40 year union is going to involve some collateral damage as we leave, so I can only assume the 400(?) year union with the Scots will be at least and maybe more difficult to dissolve. Staying together in either case purely for that reason evokes the 'bad marriage' analogy though.

I know all about them, they’re our biggest client and believe me, they’ve strategically split operations so RBS is Scotland and NatWest England, RBS as a brand will no longer exist south of the border.

Their views on independence are as follows...

It’s the shittest idea in a long history of bad ideas.

They denied their own independence by voting no in 2014.

Are we going to have neverenda?

Whether it was a mistake or not it was the right thing to do, personally think if there hadn’t been devolution 23 years ago then Scotland would have demanded and probably voted for independence before now.
Think the break up of the union if it comes though will be a direct consequence of Brexit and Johnson’s governments version of brexit. Without both those things doubt there would be any appetite for it it the general population after the last vote.

I don't think it was the right thing to do.

IIRC, national devolution has always existed as an idea but there was no great support for it until New Labour pandered to the nationalists and convinced Scotland it was the right thing to do.

Devolution should have occurred at a city level (Glasgow, Stirling etc) imo rather than a national level. That was a huge mistake that may lead to a disatrous break-up of the Union.

Don’t agree but little point debating that now we are where we are, do agree though we are heading towards a break up,There probably are ways to avoid it but non this government will take.

So RBS will just be a brand. Head office will be Nat West based in London?

As a democrat if the majority of the people of Scotland want to leave the uk fine have a referendum and leave .

this once in a generation stuff is bollox things have changed and if the polls show the people want it then make it happen.
