The Scottish Politics thread

You would have thought that the Scots would have seen enough of the unpredictable disasters of Brexit to be more cautious of going down a similar path. As for the idea that they could join the EU, problems with NI border with an EU country should make them realise that is never going to happen.

I have been to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Aberdeen this year and not encountered any unpleasantness, they are cousins so to speak and whilst we share much I would not be against there self determination.

Its a strange one but Scotland and Manchester are virtually Tory free zones yet we have Tory rule imposed us, yes that is democracy, but I can understand why another nation feels it is governed by a another nation because our city feels like it is governed by and on behalf of another city.
look at how NI is being treated. This government is really digging a hole for the Union. NI vote to stay in EU, NI gets dragged out of EU by Tories. NI gets favourable trading arrangements with EU and sees its economy growing at faster rate than any part of the UK other than London. Tory Government want to illegally torch the agreement they signed up to and described as ready baked and pull NI out of those trade arrangements. YCNMIU.

Bit weird calling a car crash a success. But same here no I'll feeling towards them if they do go, i love the place, but her rhetoric has already stirred up unpleasantness and resentment towards the English up there the past 10 yrs or so, our English friends living north of Aberdeen are moving back south because of it.

I will just feel a bit sorry for them to be honest, hoodwinked by a nationalist into a one party state with declining economy. There's irony and a sense of dejavu there. Don't you just love politicians. Not.
Thats for the future to describe. I think though, factually, you could describe the current state of the Union as a 'car crash' . That would be accurate.

Don’t the vast majority of EU countries have borders with non-EU countries?

Yes but do they travel through them to enter the EU again? Where would goods coming from France, Belgium, Netherlands land on their way to Scotland?

It certainly isn't great for us south of the border. Not quite so bad for you jocks, but that still doesn't stop you complaining eh Saddleworth ;-)

There are no problems for NI with the EU border, the problems are between NI and the rest of the UK , but thats because of Boris’ deal and will when we/ if get a sensible government be solved probably.

That's because the EU and the NI don't want a hard border with the ROI. But some NI parties dont want a border in the irish sea either. The simple fact is if you have trade border it has to go somewhere. The people in NI will never be happy with one solution over another. They use the border issue as a political football whenever it suits them and I believe would so so whoever was in power in WM. The irony is I believe most people in the UK as a whole couldn't care less where the trade border is! ?

So we should have gone for the sensible option that the rest of the UK like the NI part had the same Brexit deal. One UK , one deal, and we all stayed in the single market / customs union like NI has. Would also have headed of any chance of Scotland voting yes IMO too. It would solve the vast majority of all the Brexit issues we are still trying to figure out.
Eventually a proper government will figure that out.Maybe too late to save the union though.
