The Scottish Politics thread

Never underestimate going against best interests in favour of ideology or even pettiness!
For example: Rejoining the SM and CU would be in almost everyones best interests but we’re not going to be doing that anytime soon….
That would be akin to Moldova acceding ahead of Ukraine and then vetoing its neighbour subsequently joining. That wouldn’t be allowed to happen. The European Union is nominally the second largest economy in the world, but within it the larger countries carry greater clout. In your scenario, Scotland would certainly flex its muscle- nobody would expect anything else- but only to gain benefits for itself elsewhere. Brussels is horse-trading par excellence.

The majority of Scots did not vote for the SNP at the last election. The only reason the Nats get more seats is because the anti independence vote is split 3 ways between Labour, Tory and Lib Dem .

I've removed the first parts because that is your take, that I get, and it is as valid as any.

The last part however, is anything between not right, and a partial oversimplification, to prove a very basic point.

I'm not picking it out to bicker, to point score, or to defend or promote any party, in particular not the snp. But purely for a more complete look voting demographic and patterns.

The 'independence vote' is also split 3 ways. Or at least 2 ways, if we discount the newly formed joker party. And it outnumbers the unionist vote, once you take in the regional votes too. Which is why they have a majority in parliament. Everyone seems to completely ignore 220,000+ votes for the Greens, which is close to double the lib dem votes.

However I really think it is a miatake to try translate party votes into portraying independence/unionist summaries. By either side.

I've seen a study saying most of the green votes are by those voting labour at constituency. There are both labour and lin-dem voters thatbwant independence. And there is also a not insignificant number voting SNP that aren't up for independence. Despite obviously their core support being the indy-hopefuls. Which is why they have won 11 elections in a row now, without ever having enough support for independence to actually secure it. And it is something they know fine well, which is why they continue to play that game of dangle but don't grab.

Don’t think I have said any of that so on that note, I’m off to bed after a long hard day.

These threads always go south after 10pm.

Catch up tomorrow.
Sorry I got shouty last night. It wasn't aimed at you. I sometimes let politics wind me up too much. I should be better at my age :-)

We voted No and look what happened.

I don't know Possil well but do know Niddrie. What is it about the residents of that fine area of Edinburgh that upsets you?

Well thats not quite true is it. A quick visit to the SNP website would dispel that notion.

free buses for children is a brilliant idea. By 'garlic' do you mean Gaelic? I could assume that this was a simple spelling error but by the tone of your post probably not. What is it that upsets you about a language which has as much right to be spoken in Scotland than English?

I voted No in 2014 and then we were taken out of the EU against the democratic will of the Scottish people. I and others would like the chance to revisit that question.

It blows my mind that anyone can be happy with the venality, dishonesty, corruption, criminality and incompetence that is the standard fair from a Westminster government that we haven't voted for and whose policies we consistently reject. And before you say it, no, the Scottish Government are not in the same league or on the same planet compared to what we have been served up by them. This is not a new situation for Scotland either, I suspect that you are old enough to remember the gutting of our industries by Thatcher. Starmer may be better than that but expect similar policies to the Tories and an avoidance of the fucking huge elephant in the room that is our relationship with Europe.

You really don't need to respond as I am sure nothing that is said on this thread will shift your beliefs one iota. I suspect though that they would be in the minority in Scotland. Have a pleasant day.
Thatcher gutted most industries regardless of geographical location.

UK politics is in some sort of death spiral it seems right now.

The exact moment I buried it, is while I watched a parliament session highlights a couple of years ago.

Ian bloody Blackford was chest pounding his usual 'the Scottish people have been shafted, taken out the EU etc etc'. Followed by Boris bloody Johnson reading from His script, 'The Scottish people don't want another divisive referendum etc etc'

I remember thinking, here's two fuds I didn't vote for, on opposite sides, neither of which I agree with. Yet, they are both actually saying things that represent me and my current position. The state of it!
