Sounded like it could have been Paul merson although obviously it was far too well written for it to have been by him personally.
He won plenty, played for England, had issues with addiction and depression and played, with weight problems, for a newly promoted team

Merson has been married a couple of times and has a handful of kids. the articles imply that the writer has only ever been married once (and still is) and that they have 1 or 2 kids as shown by him saying 'daughter' rather than daughters,.

Was just about to say Konchesky. He also was a childhood Hammers fan probably explaining why he didnt want to leave when they were relegated.
WHich of his clubs was in financial dire straights though, did charlton have financial problems (i.e. administrators?)

The article implied it was just a social trip rather then club business, could've been amongst more celebrated company.
He does seem to be the best bet of those mentioned so far.
