The Smiths & Morrissey thread

Great turnout on the Leeds side streets.......
The media and record industry may try and cancel him..... but the public still love The Man

Things turn full circle in such a strange way. 37 years since I last saw The Smiths live in Manchester, my daughter was at this last night at exactly the same age that I was then.

Why have people tried cancelling him? Is it just because he’s said some things about the chinese On their eating of animals and halal meat?
Because he's a massive dick with far right, nationalist, arguably racist opinions.

I was a Smiths fan and still am. What I dislike about the man is the way he hid his homosexuality in the 1980s. In the position he was in, if he had any guts, he could have been a role model for gay teenagers who were mostly still in hiding back in those days.

I don't think he hid it. It was all there in the lyrics.

It was hidden there but he did hide it. He should have come out and used his position to help others. Obviously his sexuality and it's declaration is his own responsibility but I believe he could have used it for so much good.

Freddie Mercury, George Michael, Michael Stipe - and many more all hid it, yet non wrote more about it than Morrissey

He could have owned it. He hid it. Doesn’t matter about anyone else, and he had the ear of the students and the insular and misfits. An area with a lot of closets at the time.

My sister in law is of to see him soon. I've suggested she goes dressed as a hot dog. She's considering it.

On the subject of his sexuality. He may be what the youth of today call A sexual - google it. And in my time that would just have been a 'wanger'. That's the impression you get in his auto biography, which I've read eventhough hes not my cup of tea. However. It's not a big driver of why people dislike him, that's all to do with his politics which are very right wing.

He has openly supported a far right party and promoted at least one neo Nazi YouTuber.
He is now doing a song that appears to accuse Muslims of being behind the Notre Dame fire.

Unfortunately, I'm washing my hair that night. Strand by strand. Pity, but hey ho.
”I’d like a haircut please.”
“Which one?”

He was introduced on Bo'selecta's gay themed Blankety Blank as "Asexual Morrissey" about 20 years ago, when the other characters were all gay (George Michael, Elton John, Boy George, Will Young etc). The show was taking the piss out of his comments, it is nothing new.

Fuck all to do with anyone what his or anyone else’s sexuality is / was / will be.
Of course. Which is is why he was entirely at liberty to stay in the closet like he did. But in my opinion he could have gone public and done a lot of good for a lot of young people and he chose not to.

I keep repeating myself here but it really is a simple point.

True, but back in the early 80's (when mozza was actually very shy and vulnerable) coming out as a pop star was a very different proposition. Once the rumours started circulating the whole asexual vegan thing just became a stock answer. Tragic really if you think about it.
