The South Stand Tonight And The Drum

I just assumed it was in the away section tbh. I find it difficult to be critical of anyone trying to get an atmosphere going, anything is worth a try. It isn't something I thought I would ever encourage but the atmosphere has been so fucking miserable by and large at home matches over the last season or two so if it takes something like this to get things going (as well as the great football) then I'm all for it. It's so typical that we all sit in silence and then as soon as some poor fucker tries to do something about it, those who have been silent are suddenly happy to make some noise, shouting abuse at him.

Not sure if it was due to the drum or not but I really enjoyed the second half on Wednesday. The singing from the south stand was admirable and for once it seemed to catch on and spread around.
I like others, did laugh too much at the 'nonce' tweet though. I'm a bad person I know..

Exactly.

He, the drummer, did get some dog's abuse at the start of the 2nd half under the overhang. The ususal sarcastic comments from sectoins of the SS.

Wasn't that Blackburn away when we got promoted?!!!

Ha ha I was there that day in the Blackburn end where the fat sod with the drum was. If you could build a stereotype character from a Northern outback it was him. Big and fat with a gormless looking face, daft haircut and glasses he would periodically turn from his spot in the corner to the masses above and bang his drum. The masses responded by singing along in unison as he did so. Occasionally he would walk up and down as he banged the drum.

When Kennedy scored our fourth goal a load of Blues in that end decided to jump onto the pitch to celebrate and in doing so knocked over the fat lad with the drum. It was absolutely hilarious watching him flail like a turtle on it's back pinned by the drum as the locals howled outrage at the humiliation of their drummer. A classic moment!

Here you go!

Celtic fan in work.

Got talking, and he said he watched the match, and was really impressed with the atmosphere throughout the match.

He did add it still wasn't a match on the atmosphere at Celtic.

I agreed. ;-)

A drum ....please god no. Is this what it has come too.....if its an atmosphere that is required then get safe standing in place like Dortmund, cheaper tickets and the atmosphere will return.

Alot of people will go to the game once/twice a season....for big games lots will turn up because they have money and contacts etc, Cheaper tickets in safe standing would bring a higher volume of people who would create that atmosphere and those who create it would once again go to every match rather than once or twice a season on account of the fact it is simply too expensive to more.

Have a look at the make up of the crowd at the Etihad, its changed drastically since I stood on the Kippax and the hairs on your neck would stand up when Bluemoon was sung.....or for that matter "cos Yorkshiremen shag sheep" if playing Leeds. I am not saying its a bad thing that stadiums are full of women children, hand holding couples, but they aint going to turn the stadium into a cauldron no matter what kind of singing sections, or how many drums trumpets and maybe a conductor and some cheer leaders are thrown at it.

You're are right, it didn't drown out the home support last night because it was used sparingly. But it looked to me that, particularly the lad in the first half, it was because the drummer wasn't sure of the reaction he'd get rather than any calculated plan. When it was used, as I previously mentioned, it was to try to get a new Nolito song going. I couldn't hear it keeping time for the Pep song or any other song for that matter.

Everybody wants the atmosphere to improve but it's not a choice of either using a drum OR arms folded silence. I know its been pointed out before but there's been a few examples of the large group of lads at the back getting annoyed with those in front of them for not singing when the front or the middle have been trying to get chants going. I understand 1894 tried to address last night by spreading out a little more and last night it seemed to be a little better. The atmosphere has been improving steadily since the formation of the singing section but its not going to be electric every week, nowhere is, and in my opinion bringing a drum not only won't help that, it'll make it worse.

Finally, we have dozens of great songs and a few that a unique to us. Yes a few of our songs are just generic football chants but I'd say we have more than enough to go off without having to resort to "and that is why we follow, we follow, we follow".

i agree everyone wants the atmosphere to improve and I'm not saying its a choice between a drum or silence. but at the minute there is silence for a large majority of games, the situation you described sums up the south stand - can make noise to have a go at other fans, but don't make noise to get behind the team. its is getting better, but in a singing section people should sing, i dont get how people can stand there and have no reaction or emotion when watching the game. its up to the rest of the south stand as swell, they are standing up and the other night finally joined in.

we do have lots of great songs, but no one sings them, or they are sung so fast in the first ten minutes and then thats it. along as were singing our hearts out mate thats all that matters :)

The atmosphere was the best ive heard for years.
loved the drum.
now we need a chanter !

this club has changed dramatically over the years.
new ground
new owners
new stratosphere
we have embraced the change. now . Can the apathy towards new european methods of creating an atmosphere change.
long may it continue
well done lads

To be fair you'd need to go outside the uk to get a better atmosphere than Celtic park
