Because you're talking about a player who is a boyhood Liverpool supporter, whos' come from the lower league right through to the top, and, at 32, when his time is pretty much running out, he's offered the chance to play for Liverpool, and even make the odd appearance in the Champions League.

Even if it means he only makes 20/25 appearances a season, majority as sub (he'll certainly play the League Cup games), and gets to feature at time in the CL, it will be a sensible move for him.

When you spend most of your career in the lower divisions, if you're finally offered the chance to play for the club you love, and possibly feature in the CL, you'd be pretty stupid to turn it down.
Throw in the fact he'll get a bit more money (won't be much, but it's still a spare few K, around friends and family, let's his kids settle into the area (if he has any/wants any) as he'll probably now set up in the area for life. I can understand his reasoning and fair play to him.

Never has that cockwomble Drake's (awful) song been more fitting. The, 'started from the bottom now we're here' one.

Sorry guys, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Still makes no sense to me why an England international would choose to be a substitute. I've never once heard an ex professional say they wish they'd spent more time on the bench and less time playing but there you go!

if it was you and city came in for you, would you stay to play more, or would you go?

Easy answer, money - even if it wasn't his boyhood club.

Say he is on £60k/week at Southampton with a 2 year contract left. He moves to Liverpool on a 3 year contract at £80k/week. That would £4m extra over the next 4 years (assuming he doesn't get an extension at Saints for another year. He'd be an idiot to turn down an extra £4m (I have no ideas on wages or contract details, just showing how it could make sense for him to move).

Added onto that, he will get to play in the CL with probably a better than fair chance of earning some medals he is unlikely to see at Southampton.

Of course I'd go to City, but then I'm biased aren't I. I can see myself in the style of Andy Morrison, certainly size wise, just not in ability!!

Even if it meant you playing less than if you'd stayed put?

So you won't be expecting any players to join city from smaller clubs in the future then?

if this kid has anything about him he would come to city AND FIGHT for a first team place,we don't need to sign anybody who would be happy as a back up we only need to sign players who will fight for a first team place.shaw wouldn't be thinking I will only be playing 20 gmes he will be thinking I will make that lb spot my own.

City haven't got 30m to spend on a left back though.

You realize that he has taken a pay cut to sign for the dippers?

Lambert, Lallala, Lovren all could go to Pool they say on twitter.

I rate Lovren, I dont think it would be a mistake to get him instead of Benatia or Mangala and also cheaper and lower wages and PL experience.
